Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join our IT team and help support our world-renowned research and educational community.
As a Systems Engineer at CSHL, you’ll play a pivotal role in the administration, engineering, and operation of critical IT systems, ensuring our systems run smoothly, securely, and efficiently. Under the direction of the Assistant Director, IT Infrastructure, you’ll work closely with the Cybersecurity and User Support teams to develop and maintain high-performance, reliable, and secure IT infrastructures, while also managing incidents, troubleshooting complex issues, and providing top-notch support for the CSHL community.
Position Responsibilities
Service Management:
- As a key member of the IT Systems Engineering team, provides efficient, and effective resolution of incidents, and problems with a service-centric approach ensuring the stability and performance of CSHL services.
- Documents systems configurations, processes, and procedures to ensure reproducible, stable systems that can be efficiently supported by all CHSL IT teams. Works with other CSHL IT teams to assure knowledge transfer resulting in effective resolution of problems.
- Contributes to the continual improvement of effective management of issues and incidents. Collaborates with other members of the Systems Engineering team to establish, publish, and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure systems and identify areas for improvement.
- Maintains current knowledge of key technology trends, proactively preparing to assist the community with recommendations (e.g., server and storage hardware solutions, application and operating system developments, cybersecurity issues).
- Communicates and builds strong collaborative relationships with key stakeholders.
IT Operations Management:
- Adheres to best practice models to improve client services including ISO 20000 or ITIL4 practices for service and application support, problem and incident management, server technology management (inventory, configuration management, patching, engineering), identity and access management, and management of continuous improvement.
- Implements and maintains best practice configurations for server systems, ensuring optimal performance, security, and reliability.
- Provides support and/or services for provisioning, installation/configuration, and maintenance of IT server systems hardware, software, and related infrastructure in alignment with organizational goals and requirements. Supports the CSHL community to adhere to standards for configurations.
- Participates in new initiatives such as mobile device support/management, endpoint security initiative execution.
- Participates in proactive maintenance and monitoring procedures to identify and address potential issues ensuring minimal downtime and disruption to CSHL operations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, deploy, and maintain server infrastructure meeting the diverse needs of the CSHL community.
Systems Security:
- Collaborates with the Information Security team to address vulnerabilities, monitor security incidents, and implement security best practices.
- Provides access management services with responsiveness and adherence to policy.
Vendor Management:
- Coordination with vendors and/or other CSHL teams to aid the procurement of necessary hardware, software, and services, ensuring cost-effective solutions that align with business needs.
Position Requirements
- Experienced: You have a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience) and 5+ years of operational experience in IT system administration, IT server infrastructure operations, and systems engineering.
- Technical Expertise: You have a solid technical background in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Linux distributions, Ansible, Docker, HAProxy, SSH, DNS, and NFS/SMB/FTP. You have experience with system automation, application provisioning, patching, and vulnerability remediation.
- Problem Solver: You are skilled at troubleshooting and driving issues to resolution, using root cause analysis to identify and solve problems efficiently.
- Communicator: Your strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively with varied teams and convey complex technical information clearly.
