REQUIRED ABILITIES, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive academic training and post graduate coursework in the following areas: students with special needs; assessment/testing theory and practice (Level B); strategies for adapting and modifying curriculum.
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrated application of the Ministry of Education’s current philosophy, teaching practices, and evaluation/assessment/reporting procedures as outlined in the Manual of Policies, Procedures and Guidelines for Special Education Services.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and successful experience in teaching students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, autism, chronic health and physical disabilities, and multiple disabilities as defined by the Ministry of Education.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of CBIEPs in consultation with the classroom teacher(s), parent(s), student and district personnel.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to implement teaching practices that align with the Professional Standards for BC Educators.
  • A Master’s of Education in Special Education and at least two years of Secondary School experience in a Resource Setting
  • demonstrated understanding of and successful experience in teaching students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, autism, chronic health and physical disabilities, and multiple disabilities as defined by the Ministry of Education
  • demonstrated ability in working as a Case Manager for students at the school, district, and inter-agency levels
  • demonstrated experience and ability in being able to carry out a variety of assessments, including classroom observation, curriculum-based assessments and diagnostic teaching methods, administration and interpretation of Level B Assessments, including the WIAT, PPVT, Key Math and TOWL
  • demonstrated experience and training in facilitating literacy and numeracy intervention groups
  • demonstrated willingness to participate as an integral member of the School Based Team
  • demonstrated ability to liaise with classroom teachers to assure that the goals of the CBIEPs are effectively being implemented and evaluated
  • demonstrated experience in effective transition planning from middle to secondary and secondary to post-secondary
  • demonstrated leadership role in adapting/modifying curriculum for students with Special Needs
  • demonstrated success at working with and coordinating programs/schedules for a team of Educational Assistants and developing Behaviour and Safety Plans
  • demonstrated ability to recognize and acknowledge individual student differences and to adjust instructional practices accordingly
  • demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills
  • demonstrated ability to work closely with staff in a team-oriented approach
  • demonstrated organizational, communication and classroom management skills
  • demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues both verbally and in writing
  • demonstrated experience with a levels of intervention framework to support student learning
  • demonstrated commitment to use technology for teaching and to communicate consistently and effectively with parents and students
  • demonstrated knowledge and understanding of adolescent development
  • demonstrated commitment to and engagement in lifelong professional and personal learning
  • willingness to work in a collaborative manner with staff, administration, and parents
