The Tax Accountant is responsible for completing complex individual and business tax returns. Primary responsibilities include conducting client interviews, gathering information necessary to complete return, applying knowledge of tax laws to enter data to complete a return, researching tax issues when required, reviewing returns for accuracy, and answering tax questions. The Tax Accountant will also represent clients before the IRS and work to resolve tax resolution issues. The Tax Accountant will provide work direction and technical guidance to less experienced staff and perform additional write-up services such as bookkeeping and payroll as needed.
The Tax Accountant is expected to be an effective team member by supporting other office operations as needed and to maintain professional relationships with clients and other staff members at all times. Integrity and honesty are minimum requirements for success. The individual must be able to adapt to changing priorities, meet tight deadlines and be able to work independently without close supervision. The ideal candidate will continually seek to expand knowledge of tax laws and regulations and be inquisitive by asking questions, seeking advice and conducting independent research. The ability to work autonomously with little oversight is a must.
EDUCATION:
Bachelors of Accounting (Preferred)
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 3 years experience in accounting or tax preparation preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
· Basic typing/keyboarding skills.
· In Depth tax knowledge on the state and federal level
· Advanced knowledge of Quickbooks
· Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook
· Basic numeric keypad skills
· Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
· Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced business environment
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Conduct client interviews and document relevant tax information
· Prepare individual and business tax returns using Drake software
· Advise business owners and individuals regarding the tax code
· Procure and apply knowledge of tax laws and related regulations
· Contact clients for additional information as necessary
· Review completed returns for accuracy
· Answer tax questions
· Research tax questions related to client returns
· Confer with colleagues on tax questions
· Follow established office procedures providing input for improved efficiencies when appropriate
· Ongoing continuing education on federal and state tax laws
· Maintain constant communication with IRS, State Agencies, and our clients
· Provide tax consults and onboarding for new clients
· Maintain highly organized and updated client files
· Participates in the firm’s practice development efforts through involvement with referral sources, community and industry activities, and achieves annual practice development goals established for the position
