POSITION SUMMARY

The Indirect Tax Analyst is responsible for preparing indirect tax and regulatory filings across multiple U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions, responding to jurisdictional inquiries and audits, and supporting tax-related compliance and process improvement efforts. This role works under the direction of the Tax Manager to ensure timely, accurate filings and internal documentation in alignment with applicable tax laws, GAAP, and company policies.
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to learning tax processes and improving routine workflows. This role requires the ability to communicate clearly and work effectively within a cross-functional team in a regulated environment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Tax, or related field
  • 0-2 years of relevant tax or accounting experience preferred, indirect tax experience a plus
  • Basic understanding of indirect tax principles, GAAP, and accounting controls
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel; experience with tax engines or ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Avalara, Vertex) a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Willingness to learn railroad industry-specific tax and regulatory requirements
  • Professional integrity and accountability
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Basic research skills using tax tools or online resources, Bloomberg is a plus
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new procedures and systems

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Previous experience in Rail Transportation, Supply Chain Logistics, Manufacturing and/or Oil and Gas industries
  • Previous experience in Canadian GST, HST, PST return preparation
  • Previous experience filing regulatory reports, registrations, and licensing

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and file indirect tax returns (sales/use, property, fuel, franchise, gross receipts, and other state/local taxes) for multiple U.S. states and Canadian provinces
  • Ensure timely and accurate payment of taxes and filing of regulatory reports
  • Respond to tax authority inquiries and notices via phone, email, or written correspondence under guidance of Tax Manager
  • Support state and local tax audits, including compiling documentation
  • Document and maintain indirect tax compliance procedures to support consistency and internal controls
  • Assist with basic data gathering and summaries to support tax analysis conducted by the Tax Manager
  • Assist with gathering data related to business transactions and process changes for review by the Tax Manager
  • Assist in nexus studies and registration processes for new jurisdictions
  • Prepare monthly accruals, journal entries, and related analysis for tax reserves and liabilities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support routine tax-related data needs and transaction review
  • Support the Indirect Tax team in developing and maintaining strong internal controls and compliance tracking
  • Participate in process improvement discussions and contribute ideas for improving recurring tasks
