Description

THE DEPARTMENT

We are looking for an interesting and enthusiastic teacher, whether experienced or newly
qualified, who is able to share their ideas with lively and talented pupils. The successful
candidate will be expected to teach throughout the School, including the Sixth Form.
The Chemistry Department consists of eight full-time teachers and one part-time teacher,
with two technicians and an assistant. The department is very well equipped. Chemistry
teaching takes place in five laboratories and four other teaching rooms. These, together
with the departmental staff room and the Head of Department’s office, surround a large
central preparation room. All rooms are equipped with multimedia TV screens with
Bluetooth connection. All staff and pupils are equipped with Microsoft Surface devices.
The Chemistry Department is committed to making the best use of technology to further
enhance the high-quality learning and teaching that goes on within the department.
Chemistry is introduced in Year 9 after an introductory General Science course in Years
7 and 8. In 2025, 160 pupils have chosen to sit the Edexcel IGCSE in Chemistry at higher
level. Approximately 90 pupils enter the Sixth Form each year to study AQA A-Level
Chemistry. Results in public examinations are consistently excellent. Full details are
available on the Academic Life section of the school website. Each year several pupils win
places to read Chemistry or Natural Sciences at Oxbridge and other leading universities.
The department has strong links with outside bodies. Teams are entered every year for
the RSC ChemQuiz competition in Years 9-11, the RSC Cambridge Chemistry Race, the
RSC Cambridge Chemistry Challenge in Year 12, and the International Chemistry
Olympiad in Year 13. Several members of the department are examiners for AQA. We
offer a Middle School Chemistry Society, a Senior School Chemistry Society and University
Challenge Enrichment sessions for those students that want to explore Chemistry further.
