TEACHER OF CLASSICS

Bedford School’s outstanding Classics department seeks a full-time teacher to join the team from September
2025.
Latin and Classical Civilisation have become increasingly popular since reform of languages within the Prep
School made Latin compulsory for all boys in Year 6 and 7. The Upper School department is situated in the
newly-refurbished 41 De Parys Building within bright and spacious classrooms, which sit alongside the English
department’s rooms, with whom we share communal facilities.
The department consists of three teachers; one of whom has responsibility for the delivery of Year 6-8 Latin, and
two others who teach fully across the school’s age range up to Year 13.
The successful candidate will be a team player. The ability to communicate effectively is essential to enable our
happy, inclusive and purposeful working environment to f lourish. The successful candidate will also be able to
make a substantial contribution to inspiring pupils’ passion for Classics beyond the classroom.
This role could be an exciting new challenge for a well-qualif ied teacher seeking to broaden their experience
amidst outstanding facilities and opportunities. Alternatively, Bedford School has outstanding and well-
established in-school support available for recent graduates who wish to train as a teacher. The department
successfully hosted a PGCE trainee from the University of Cambridge last term and the team is always open to
fresh approaches to enable high quality teaching and learning within a friendly and supportive environment.
Full-time teachers at Bedford are expected to play a full part in the extensive co-curricular programme and be a
Tutor attached to a boarding or day house.
The Head of Classics, Alistair Melvill, would be happy to talk to prospective applicants and can be contacted
through the main school reception on 01234 362200 or by email amelvill@bedfordschool.org.uk
