A teacher of Mathematics and Computer Science is required for this academically selective, coeducational North London day school. The successful candidate will join two successful departments teaching both subjects full-time across the entire ability range from Year 7 to Year 13.
Applicants should be academically well qualified: it is expected that they will have a strong grade in A Level Mathematics (or an equivalent qualification) and a good degree consisting of a significant amount of Mathematics. We expect to appoint someone who can teach Further Mathematics and help prepare pupils for STEP examinations. The successful candidate will also have expertise in Computer Science theory and practice through either their degree or career. Proficiency with Python is important, and knowledge of other programming languages would be an advantage.
The school has a great deal of experience in successfully training teachers who enter the profession without formal teaching qualifications (including the current Head of Mathematics and several senior colleagues) and in providing suitable opportunities for continued professional development for experienced teachers. The school supports colleagues who wish to gain Qualified Teaching Status.
Several existing colleagues teach both Mathematics and Computer Science. In Mathematics, our teaching style is Socratic: pupils encounter new material through exploration and problem-solving. We aim for pupils to take real ownership of their Mathematics by ensuring that all new study comes from them. This approach leads to a deeper understanding of the subject and helps pupils become the best mathematicians they can be.
Computer Science is taught as a discrete subject in Key Stage Three and is a popular optional subject thereafter. All pupils are taught the fundamentals of computer programming and gain hands-on experience writing their own instructions for computers to follow. Pupils use computational thinking to solve problems and learn to use computers creatively to implement their own ideas and designs. Pupils explore how computing power is transforming the analysis and exploitation of information, including through Artificial Intelligence, and understand the rapid and far-reaching changes this brings to work and society.
We have 32 specialist Mathematics teachers and 6 Computer Science teachers. Mathematics is the most popular A-level choice at Highgate, with approximately 100 Further Mathematicians in the Sixth Form. Standards of achievement in both subjects are extremely high: in last year’s public examinations, 86% of candidates were awarded an A* or A grade in Maths A Level and 88% achieved this in Further Maths A Level; in A Level Computer Scientists all but one pupil achieved an A*/A and pupils make successful Oxbridge applications in both subjects (separately or as joint honours) almost every year.
About 220 pupils enter each of the UK Mathematics Challenges, with around twenty pupils qualifying for follow on rounds. In recent years, we have had pupils placed in the top fifty nationally in both the Intermediate and Senior Olympiads. Participation in Computer Science competitions is similarly excellent: our pupils have achieved remarkable success in competitions such as the CyberFirst Girls Competition, the Oxford University Computing Challenge, and the British Algorithmics Olympiad.
