Key Responsibilities

  • Work with individual pupils and small groups to reinforce learning across the curriculum.
  • Support teacher-planned activities using established school methods and instructional approaches.
  • Assist pupils with phonics, mathematics strategies, literacy activities, and other curriculum tasks where required.
  • Encourage active participation by helping pupils understand instructions and remain focused on assigned work.
  • Use questioning, modelling, and practical demonstrations to help pupils develop understanding and confidence.
  • Promote increasing independence in learning, organisation, routines, and personal responsibility.
  • Support pupils with appropriate personal organisation and hygiene routines when necessary.
  • Record pupil activities and provide relevant observations to the class teacher.
  • Prepare worksheets, learning materials, equipment, displays, and other classroom resources.
  • Help set up classrooms before lessons and reorganise materials after activities.
  • Create and maintain displays that showcase pupil work and support the learning environment.
  • Build positive relationships with pupils through patience, respect, encouragement, and clear communication.
  • Promote enthusiasm for learning and help pupils develop confidence in classroom participation.
  • Supervise pupils during breaks, transitions, school trips, specialist lessons, and other designated activities.
  • Apply positive behaviour-management approaches in accordance with school policies.
  • Act as a consistent role model for respectful conduct, responsibility, and cooperation.
  • Communicate closely with the class teacher regarding lesson preparation, student needs, and classroom priorities.
  • Report concerns relating to pupil learning, behaviour, welfare, or wellbeing to the class teacher promptly.
  • Maintain confidentiality when handling pupil, family, and school information.
  • Work cooperatively with teaching staff, administrative teams, parents, and other members of the school community.
  • Remain flexible when classroom or school priorities change during the day.
  • Take initiative within the boundaries of the role and seek appropriate guidance when required.
  • Participate in relevant training and professional development to strengthen classroom support skills.
  • Contribute positively to wider school activities and community events when requested.
  • Follow safeguarding expectations and support the protection and wellbeing of children at all times.
