SEN Teaching Assistant

Finchley, London Borough of Barnet | £100-115 per day, depending on relevant experience

Full-time, long-term temporary; Monday to Friday, term time

Start date and exact working hours to be agreed before placement.

Prospero Teaching is seeking a SEN Teaching Assistant in Finchley, Barnet, to support pupils with autism and early communication needs. You will help children understand routines, join classroom activities and develop independence. Working closely with the teacher and SENCO, you will turn individual targets into manageable steps within the school day.

Your responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one and small-group support in early years or primary learning activities.
• Use visual timetables, now-and-next prompts and clear language consistently.
• Support shared attention, turn-taking and communication through structured activities.
• Help pupils manage transitions and sensory needs using agreed approaches.
• Record progress and share observations that help staff adjust support.

What you will need

• Previous UK teaching assistant experience in an early years or primary setting.
• Practical experience supporting autistic children and communication development.
• A patient, observant approach and confidence following individual support plans.

Experience with PECS, Makaton or play-based interventions would be useful. A relevant teaching assistant or early years qualification is desirable.
