Victoria College: Vic One (Stowe-Gullen Stream) Position: Teaching Assistant (1 Position - CUPE 3902, Unit 2) VIC 170Y1Y: The Impact of Science on Our Society Science has had a long-standing impact on society, dating back to the stone-age. This course will examine several aspects of the interplay between science and society. We will discuss how science is funded in Canada, the relevance of basic/foundational research versus translational clinical research. Further, we will unpack grant proposal writing and the assessment process. Issues surrounding biotech and start-up spin-out companies will be interrogated through a company creation exercise. Major topics in science including drug resistance, immunization, and genetic modification issues will be discussed. Posting Date: May 4, 2026 Closing Date: June 3, 2026 Estimated course enrolment: 25 Hours of work: 70 hours Class schedule: Tuesdays 11am–1pm Dates of appointment: September 1, 2026-April 30, 2027 Salary: $53.92 per hour as per CUPE agreement Course Modality: In-person, Victoria College campus Qualifications required: Undergraduate student who has successfully completed the Vic One Stowe-Gullen stream, with a strong background and demonstrable academic achievement in the life sciences and demonstrated experience in written and oral communication of scientific material. Must have excellent research and time management skills. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to provide mentorship and academic assistance to the students in VIC170Y. Previous tutoring experience preferred. Description of duties: The Teaching Assistant will be required to fulfill the following duties not limited to: Consulting with students outside of class time. Assisting with in-lab experimental design. Assisting supervisor in marking oral and written presentations and quizzes. Helping students to prepare their final assignment (5 page grant proposal).
