POSITION SUMMARY

As a cornerstone role within the University of Alberta’s Information Services & Technology unit, the Learning Space Audio-Visual Team Lead offers a dynamic and rewarding opportunity for a technology professional passionate about education, innovation, and leadership. Situated within the Digital Learning Environment portfolio, this role goes beyond day-to-day operations to drive the strategic vision and continuous evolution of AV technologies that power over 300 learning and meeting spaces across campus.
This position offers the chance to lead a highly skilled technical team and take ownership of advanced AV support, infrastructure lifecycle management, and critical institutional projects such as the Central and Departmental Classroom Evergreening initiatives. From resolving complex tier 2 and 3 issues to guiding high-impact installations, your expertise will directly influence the quality of hybrid and in-person learning experiences at one of Canada’s top research universities.
You’ll collaborate closely with senior AV designers, project leaders, and fellow team leads to ensure seamless integration of cutting-edge tools, including AV control systems, video conferencing platforms, and virtual/mixed reality solutions. With a strong service-oriented mindset and a commitment to innovation, you will help shape the digital future of teaching and learning, making this a role where your leadership has real, institution-wide impact.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma in the area of media, design, theatre production, radio/television, and/or IT
  • Strong communication (oral and written), problem-solving, analytical and time management skills
  • 15+ years of experience in the audio-visual or IT industry
  • Minimum of 10 years of working in an AV environment at a post-secondary institution
  • Advanced technical knowledge of web and video conferencing systems
  • Experience within an educational environment
  • Experience with training both groups and individuals
  • Demonstrated analytical and diagnostic skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Be able to deal with change and ambiguity
  • Need to have a clean driving record, a Class 5 driver’s license, and advanced driver training from the U of A
  • Excellent customer service skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • AVIXA – Project Management for AV Professionals
  • NAlT Electronics Engineering Technology Diploma
  • CTS, CTS-I, CTS-D, or CET Certification
  • A+ Certification
  • IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) - Foundations Course
  • The ability to converse in multiple languages

Responsibilities
  • Lead day-to-day operations and advanced support for AV technologies in centrally supported learning spaces.
  • Supervise and mentor the AV team, managing escalated tier 2 and 3 technical issues.
  • Oversee AV system lifecycle management, including maintenance, upgrades, and performance optimization.
  • Collaborate on the planning and execution of AV installations and renovations, including Evergreening projects.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to align AV operations with institutional goals and learning strategies.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies, ensuring AV solutions remain innovative and pedagogically relevant.
