About the role In this role, you will be crucial in ensuring the effective and sustainable management of the Council's built environment, helping oversee the construction, maintenance, and renewal of all civil infrastructure. The Construction Team Leader is an operational leadership role, offering direct support and guidance to a small team tasked with delivering Council’s in-house civil construction projects. Key responsibilities include: * Undertake labouring duties in road/drainage and other civil construction actives in accordance with time frames. * Be a team player and offer prompt guidance when the team require. * Provide technical guidance to junior or new staff members and support training activities. * Develop strong working relationships with supervisors and frontline employees. * Use knowledge and experience to problem solve and implement solutions. * Assist the unit in providing a customer focused service and efficient operation. * Suggest ways to work better and support in implementing improvement recommendations. * Work within Occupational Health and Safety Regulations/Codes of Practice and use all necessary safety equipment and safe work practices. * Promote a safety-first culture, ensuring Council staff and sub-contractor’s compliance to relevant OH&S policies, legislation, regulations and Codes of Practice. * Assist and support the Site Supervisor in providing effective leadership to a team of field staff and sub-contractors, focused on delivering high-quality outcomes through the continued development of team safety, capability, and engagement.  About you To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrated ability to play a leading role in the supervision and direction of work being performed by the team. In addition, you will have: * Communication skills, with the ability to provide instructions, demonstrate basic writing and speaking skills. * Experience in resolving work specific problems or responding to new situations. * Ability to work to plan and manage time effectively. * Proven ability in providing effective leadership to an individual or team. * Demonstrated experience, competency or qualifications in both road and drainage construction / maintenance and related activities. * Demonstrated experience in the operation and maintenance of small miscellaneous plant and equipment associated with the Construction Unit. * Ability to perform manual work including lifting of weights and manual excavation (shovelling) in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety guidelines. * Ability to operate Council plant including rollers, vibrating equipment and other minor plant and equipment. * Knowledge of relevant road laws and road sign regulations. * Knowledge of relevant safe work practices within a civil engineering environment. * Basic computer skills including the ability to use mobile devices including but not limited to smartphones. * Current Victorian Drivers licence.
