TEAM LEADER – NURSERIES

Mackay Regional Council is seeking a dynamic and motivated Team Leader – Nurseries to lead our nursery operations and inspire a team dedicated to growing our region’s natural beauty.
As the Team Leader Nurseries, you’ll oversee the day-to-day operations of our nurseries, including plant propagation, volunteer engagement, and maintaining industry accreditation. You’ll lead a skilled team, drive continuous improvement, and ensure high-quality service delivery aligned with our standards and values.
Your day-to-day duties will include:
- Leading and inspiring a dedicated nursery team to deliver high-quality outcomes.
- Contributing to the review and enhancement of operational processes to drive efficiency and innovation.
- Ensuring tasks are completed on time and to a high standard, aligned with service level agreements and work quality benchmarks.
- Creating a safe, supportive, and wellbeing-focused workplace culture that prioritises health, hygiene, and psychological safety.
- Overseeing and delivering a wide range of nursery services, from propagation to plant care, with a focus on excellence.
- Maintaining accreditation under the Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA), ensuring best practice standards.
- Taking on additional responsibilities as directed, within the scope of your role, to support team and organisational goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- Qualification in Horticulture, Rural Operations, Production Nursery, Nursery Operations, or related field
- Diploma (preferred); OR
- Less formal qualifications.
- General Construction Induction Training.
- QLD “C” Class Drivers Licence or interstate equivalent. Note: interstate licences must be transferred to QLD within three (3) months of commencement.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
Essential
- Practical experience in the planning, scheduling and delivery of minor projects.
- Experience supervising a team.
- Practical experience in planning and allocating resources to complete scheduled tasks.
- Well-developed computer operation skills with the ability to use corporate systems and Microsoft Office products.
- Well-developed ability to deal with difficult situations, clearly articulate issues, negotiate outcomes and resolve problems, with an attitude to take personal responsibility for promptly handling and resolving workplace tasks.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to build rapport and effective working relationships, teamed with the ability to communicate appropriately both verbally and in writing.
- Well-developed ability in the coordination, planning, scheduling and delivery of scheduled maintenance activities.
- Well-developed team management skills including the ability to lead and motivate staff to achieve agreed performance and service standards to meet deadlines and corporate goals.
- Well-developed time management skills including the ability to set team and individual operational priorities, schedule resources and organise work.
- Well-developed ability to maintain and operate a wide range of plant and equipment relevant to the position.
- Well-developed ability to read and interpret plans, drawings and specifications.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will enjoy a dynamic role that includes regular local travel and may also participate in an on-call roster to support operational needs.
