Job Description Summary As Valve Converter Electrical Team Lead, you will report to the Valve Converter Engineering Manager. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic team of engineers working on the delivery and application engineering of existing and new power electronics applications for power systems, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming “HVDC Grid”. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition. HVDC Valves Converter are large and complex structures, with typical dimensions of several metres in each direction and weighing many tens of tonnes. The design and the development of such converters is technically challenging and involves a variety of engineering disciplines, contribution through teamwork and an innovative approach. The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field. Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there will be international travel opportunities to collaborate with other GE units, test laboratories and customer sites. Job Description Responsibilities: Schedule the teams work and define priorities; Perform people reviews; Manage people development through knowledge sharing and mentoring; Forecast the upcoming work for the team; Effectively communicates technical issues throughout the organization; Uses contemporary communication tools to share across Engineering and business silos. Ensure engineering processes and best practise is followed and correct auditable documentation is created; Ensure engineering product is delivered with the correct quality levels for the client and the marketplace; Collate and report teams KPI’s; Review and approve key technical documentation; Lead team in solving challenging technical issues; Ensure that the project electrical deliverables for the Valve Converter Engineering Department are correctly managed and delivered by the respective Project Leads; Lead the capture, Implementation and validation of project and technology requirements; Ensure work is aligned with customer specification at project stage (Clause by Clause, Risk analysis); Lead work on completing technical requirements specifications to solve project issues; Proactive interaction with other engineering departments for product definition (System design, Valve Converter Mechanical, Main Scheme, Layout, Commercial); Ability to, where required, make independent decisions; Ensure that work performed considers applicable international standards and policies Foster an environment of knowledge sharing and mentoring within the team; Candidate profile The candidate will be educated to degree level in electrical or electronic engineering and have at least 5 years’ experience in Power Electronics. Candidates must have proven experience of the design and/or development of power electronic converters (preferably at high power >1MVA). A strong understanding of power semiconductors, their control, protection and application is required. Previous experience of management of technical issues with client and contract is preferred. An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering disciplines and a willingness to share the knowledge are essential qualities. Qualifications/Requirements: Educated to degree level in electrical, electronic engineering or equivalent STEM degree.
