Position Overview

We’re looking for a talented and experienced Tech Lead, with experience across the full stack of web development and proven leadership capabilities. In this role, you will lead a team of 5-6 engineers while continuing to be at the forefront of developing and enhancing our product offerings, which play a crucial role in improving student outcomes through extracurricular activities. Your technical expertise combined with your leadership skills will help us scale the product as we go through our next exciting growth phase, and also ensure we deliver high-quality, reliable, and user-friendly solutions.
You will be a key member of our dynamic and growing Product & Engineering team, balancing hands-on technical work with team leadership responsibilities. You’ll write clean and maintainable code, perform code reviews, and collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers, while also guiding and developing your team members. Your ability to take initiative, mentor engineers, manage technical delivery, and contribute to solution architecture sessions will be essential. Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Work collaboratively with product manager, designer and other engineers to deliver solutions that enhance our customers’ experience
• Writing code that is clean, highly maintainable and well-tested
• Performing code reviews with peer engineers
• Make suggestions on how to improve the codebase and architecture
• Work with the support team to debug and fix production defects

Team Leadership

• Lead a team of 5-6 engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with team members to provide feedback, support career development, and address concerns
• Coordinate work for the team, managing the team backlog and work assignment to ensure efficient delivery
• Mentor and coach team members, helping them grow their technical and professional skills
• Collaborate with other tech leads and engineering managers to align on technical standards and practices
• Partner with product management to plan and prioritise work based on business objectives

Tech Stack

We don’t need you to have in-depth knowledge of all of these technologies (though it’s a bonus if you do), but we do need you to be able to work with our stack:

• Angular (or equivalent experience with React/Vue)
• Node.js
• PostgreSQL
• Typescript
• AWS (or Google Cloud/Azure)
• Serverless infrastructure (Lambda, ECS Fargate)
• Monorepo management using Nx
• Jest, Storybook, Cypress for testing

Skills and Experience

Technical Skills

• You have 6+ years of deep engineering experience as a full-stack or backend developer and are comfortable working across a range of technologies
• You have a strong understanding of computer science fundamentals (and this extends to performance, data structures, algorithms and design patterns)
• Your experience ranges across the full SDLC
• You have experience working in, and helping to create, a strong engineering culture

Leadership Skills

• You have 2+ years of experience leading or mentoring engineers, either formally or informally
• You’re skilled at managing competing priorities and helping your team deliver on commitments
• You have experience conducting one-on-one meetings and providing constructive feedback
• You’re comfortable managing a team backlog and coordinating work assignments
• You can balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities

Soft skills

• You’re highly motivated to deliver a fantastic product to our users and you take ownership of the problems we face, working effectively to eliminate them
• You possess strong communication skills, enabling you to work closely and efficiently with the team towards goals
• You have a collaborative leadership style that empowers team members while maintaining high standards
