THE OPPORTUNITY:

We are seeking an experienced Technical Publication Author to join a dynamic team in Melbourne delivering high-quality technical documentation in support of complex Defence programs. As part of an MSP supporting Defence capability development and sustainment, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and usability of documentation for military systems and platforms.
The Senior Technical Writer leads the creation and management of complex technical documentation that supports the installation, operation, and maintenance of specialised equipment. Serving as a subject matter expert, this role ensures technical content is accurate, clear, and user-centric by collaborating closely with engineers and other stakeholders. It drives documentation excellence through project leadership, mentorship, and continuous improvement, contributing to the organisation’s knowledge sharing and operational effectiveness

Responsibilities
  • Analyses requirements and develops source material for technical documentation.
  • Consults with engineering and technical staff as a subject matter expert.
  • Collaborates with editors, illustrators, and other stakeholders to prepare draft documentation.
  • Writes complex technical documents such as procedure manuals, service manuals, and related publications.
  • Produces documentation covering the installation, operation, and maintenance of electronic, electrical, mechanical, and other technical equipment.
  • Develops materials including operational specifications, bulletins, articles, service manuals, and marketing publications.
  • Gains subject matter knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing experiments and production processes, and reviewing blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings, notes, and trade journals.
  • Rewrites existing articles, bulletins, manuals, or similar publications as required.
  • Participates in the development of organisational goals and procedures.
  • Plans and prepares technical content for major publication projects.
  • Leads or champions multi-disciplinary or cross-functional teams as a subject matter expert.
  • Oversees the compiling, writing, editing, and coordination of technical documentation.
  • Provides work leadership and mentorship to lower-level employees as needed.
  • Investigates and makes recommendations regarding challenges encountered in documentation projects.
  • Plans, conducts, and directs work on complex projects with a high degree of autonomy.
