The Technical Application Engineer serves as a primary technical resource for S&C products, delivering application expertise, developing detailed technical quotations, and executing order entry processes—while also managing projects through the implementation phase to ensure seamless execution and customer satisfaction. This role interfaces directly with customers, district managers, and internal stakeholders to provide precise product solutions aligned with engineering requirements. The Engineer also advises team members by sharing in-depth knowledge of product design, manufacturing processes, and internal workflows, driving both technical accuracy and operational efficiency within the department.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • B. Eng in Electrical Engineering.
  • P.Eng Licensed.
  • 4-6 years practical experience in application engineering systems, technical sales support or electrical engineering consultant.
  • Demonstrated experience in an applications or similar role including experience and technical knowledge relating to medium and high voltage products, applications and customization capabilities.
  • Solid knowledge of Electrical Power Distribution, Generation and Transmission.
  • Solid knowledge of Power Systems to support the Utility and Commercial & Industrial markets.
  • Solid knowledge of power system protection & control applications for medium and/or high voltage electrical distribution.
  • Knowledge of electrical standards for electrical equipment – CSA, ANSI, IEEE.
  • Proficient with IT applications including Oracle, Salesforce.com and Microsoft Office products.
  • Working knowledge of Citrix, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Solid Edge, an asset.
  • Ability to comprehend electric schematic drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to perform complex problem solving and evaluation of alternatives in independent and collaborative situations.
  • Critical thinking and ability to solve abstract problems.
  • Excellent time management, communication, and organization skills.
  • Bilingual in English and French is an asset.
    Physical Effort :
    Normal or frequent minor physical effort required for the day-to-day activity in the workplace. May involve standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs and lifting/moving/using objects or equipment up to 5kg/11lbs
    Travel : Occasional travel may be required for site visit with outside sales
    Ability to Work From Home : Yes – Hybrid, in office one day a week if within GTA. Remote opportunity for out-of-province/GTA.

Responsibilities
  • Drive the execution of business-critical initiatives with a focus on efficiency, timely delivery, and high-quality outcomes. Ensuring alignment with key priorities
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of S&C’s products, applications, and offering capabilities, including how S&C can support custom requests. Regularly gather information and attend trainings to build technical depth, especially for custom projects.
  • Interpret customer specifications and single line diagrams of transmission and distribution level systems and provide technical knowledge and timely responses regarding technical, application and commercial questions to customers and district managers applying S&C protection devices.
  • Leverage understanding of S&C offerings and match with customer specifications and where applicable determine technical deviations.
  • Critically analyze multiple perspectives from Product Management and Sales team members to build a deeper understanding of customer requests.
  • Review conditions of service documents for power utilities in Canada to understand service entrance equipment requirements.
  • Lead pre-sales support to help potential customers in resolving their problems and creating solutions.
  • Utilize internal systems (e.g., Design Generator, estimating tools) to verify accuracy and completeness of outputs for standard and custom orders. Maintain a solid understanding of competitor capabilities and how S&C’s customized product offerings compare.
  • As the primary liaison between internal Product Engineers, Power System Services Engineers, Order Management and Sales Engineers Offer selling solutions directly to District Managers and customers.
  • Respond to and provide technical information to internal and external clients by telephone, written communication, or in person.
  • Partner closely with Outside Sales to develop customized sales solutions based on in-depth understanding of customer needs. Assess potential risks and provide feedback to inform bid strategy. Share learnings from custom solution work with fellow Sales team members.
  • Manage project requirements from order entry to shipping. Track deliverables and dates associated with custom requests (quotations, orders, shipping, after-sales support), providing timely and appropriate updates to Outside Sales and the customer as needed. When deviations from the plan arise, work quickly and effectively to resolve issues, maintaining focus on project success metrics.
  • Review switchgear drawings and follow-up on implementation of design change requests.
  • Prepare technical proposals including products, services, and pricing strategies. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of pricing strategy (e.g., targets, gross margin management, balancing target margin to win project, competitive feedback, etc.) and provide observations to the appropriate Sales team members to help deliver on the pricing strategy.
  • Present S&C’s insights, solutions and products to customers. Work closely with Outside Sales and the customer to explore options for potential customized solutions to address customer needs. Successfully provide application and technical information that will help to make informed decisions about potential customized solutions, including lead times, cost, and any other resources needed.
  • Proficient level of Electrical & Protection Engineering performing various calculations, including available fault current analysis and fuse curve coordination.
  • Provides assistance to team members in such areas as, product knowledge, production process, departmental procedures and processes.
  • Manage large and complex tender projects.
  • Manage pre-tender and pre-sales order kick-off meeting process and post sales order hand-off process and kick-off meeting.
  • Participate in customer site visits & meetings to understand constraints required to accurately design switchgear layout and offer suggestions to district managers.
  • Recommend protection solutions for medium voltage systems consisting of substation transformers, busses and feeders.
  • Provide technical guidance & training to new and existing other team members.
  • Ensure internal teams and stakeholders are well informed of changes, problems, or decisions that impact them. Maintain calm and professionalism in fast-paced, challenging scenarios.
