Our client is an established Australian organisation operating within a specialised, data-driven industry. Technology plays a critical role in the services they provide, with complex applications and data platforms supporting customers and industry partners across Australia.

With an established technology environment and a small development team, they are now looking for an experienced Technical Lead to help drive the next stage of their technology capability. The organisation is based in Armidale, NSW.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting directly to the COO, the Technical Lead will take ownership of the technical direction and delivery of the organisation’s core software platforms.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You’ll remain close to the code while leading solution design, making architecture decisions, mentoring developers and improving how the team delivers software.

The environment is heavily focused on backend applications and data, making this an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems and wants genuine ownership over the systems they work with.

The current technology environment includes PHP, JavaScript, Knockout.js, MySQL, AWS, Linux, Bash, REST APIs and Git.

• KEY RESPONSIBILITIESLead solution design and technical architecture across core applications;
• Remain hands-on across software development, database design and integrations;
• Provide technical direction and mentoring to a small development team;
• Design and optimise relational databases, data models and data flows
• Develop and support REST API integrations;
• Improve engineering practices across code review, testing, documentation and deployment;
• Identify and prioritise technical debt and platform improvements;
• Troubleshoot complex application, database and production issues;
• Work across AWS and Linux environments;
• Partner with business stakeholders to translate requirements into practical technical solutions.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

• Strong commercial software development experience with a focus on backend engineering;
• Experience operating as a Technical Lead, Lead Developer or highly experienced Senior Software Engineer;
• Strong SQL, relational database design and data modelling skills;
• Experience across application architecture and solution design;
• Experience developing and integrating REST APIs;
• The ability to provide technical leadership while remaining hands-on;
• Experience mentoring and supporting other developers;
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills;
• The ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
