Description:

Technical Operations, Resources and Services (TORS) is a large cross-university team providing specialist Technical Support for teaching, research, and commercial activities. The Laboratory and Analytical Operations (LAO) technical team supports laboratory-based activities across a range of disciplines. Our laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, and we are looking for a technical specialist to join the team facilitating students and staff to leverage the full value of the equipment through provision of excellent training and support.
In this role you would be directly involved in supporting laboratory-based activities including under-graduate and post-graduate student research projects, other practical teaching, research and innovation activities. You will work closely with team members to achieve this and support a range of areas, for example: the Materials and Engineering Research Institute (MERI), our Chemical Engineering degree course, the Department of Biosciences and Chemistry, the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre (BMRC) and the Sheffield Multimodal Imaging Centre (SMIC), which brings together imaging expertise and facilities from across the University to work with industrial partners. Support for materials-related imaging and chemical analysis and imaging will be a key focus for this post.
You will need to have relevant practical experience and knowledge of chemical analysis / imaging techniques with proficiency gained from method development and troubleshooting. A background in materials science would be an advantage, but more important is the aptitude and enthusiasm to learn new techniques and to train and support our students to use them. Laboratory and chemical safety knowledge is also essential.
Examples of relevant chemical analysis / imaging techniques include: SEM; TEM; AFM; FTIR; Raman spectroscopy; mass spectrometry; TGA; DSC; DTA; DMA; dilatometry; EPR; XRF; powder XRD, micro CT. You will be expected to work flexibly and have, or develop, skills to allow you to support LAO delivery across a range of disciplines. You will be highly motivated and meticulous in your work, with a professional work ethic, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively across team boundaries sharing knowledge and skills to ensure customer focussed results.
