The Laboratory and Analytical Operations (LAO) technical team supports laboratory-based activities across a range of disciplines. We are recruiting a technician to support the Biosciences and Chemistry area primarily, but also to support other disciplines within the LAO area.
In this role, you will be involved in supporting laboratory-based activities in Biosciences and Chemistry. You will be responsible for providing, and continuously improving, technical support for the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching program, working closely with other technical staff to achieve this.
You will support a range of different laboratory areas for example, Teacher Education Science, Natural Built Environment, Chemical Engineering, and Food and Nutrition.
You’ll need relevant practical experience and knowledge of analytical chemistry, with proficiency gained from preparing and running samples, method development and troubleshooting. Examples of relevant techniques include HPLC, GC, mass spectrometry, NMR, FTIR, ICP, FPLC and spectrophotometric/plate reader assays.
You will have aptitude and enthusiasm for learning new techniques/instruments and for training and supporting our students to use them. Laboratory and chemical safety knowledge is also essential.
You will be expected to work flexibly and have, or develop, skills to allow you to support LAO delivery in a variety of related disciplines such as nutritional science, food technology, biochemistry, synthetic chemistry and chemical engineering.
Being highly motivated and meticulous in your work, with a professional work ethic, you will be able to work both independently and collaboratively across team boundaries, sharing knowledge and skills to ensure customer-focussed results.
We offer a diverse range of benefits and opportunities to pursue a rewarding and fulfilling career in a supportive environment.
You will be contractually enrolled into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) – one of the largest and most generous defined benefit pension schemes in the country.
Find out more about the LGPS.
If you are, or have been, a recent member of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) directly prior to joining us, you can choose to opt out of the LGPS and remain in the USS. Please contact the Pensions team to discuss options available.
