Job Description Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity We have an exciting opportunity for a Technician, Chemical Safety to join our Technical Services – Research team within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. In this hands‑on role you’ll work alongside researchers, technical teams and suppliers to support strong, consistent chemical safety practices across a complex and dynamic environment. The position is well suited to someone who enjoys being close to operational activity, values practical problem‑solving, and takes pride in enabling others to work safely and confidently. You’ll also have the opportunity to build strong relationships across the Faculty and contribute to continuous improvement in laboratory safety In this role, you will: Support improvements to chemical safety practices across FMHS, including purchase, storage, use and disposal of chemicals Liaise with facility users to arrange appropriate storage or disposal of materials, substances, equipment and samples Maintain assigned facilities to a high standard, ensuring ongoing functionality and regulatory compliance Provide advice, guidance and training to staff and students on chemical safety requirements Advise on risk assessments and contribute to the development of safe working methods and laboratory safety improvements This is a fulltime fixed term (12 months) opportunity. The salary range for this role is $63,600 - $79,300 based on skills and experience. You bring a collaborative approach and are comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers, technical staff and service providers. With a strong awareness of health and safety, you are confident providing advice and supporting others to work safely and in line with regulatory requirements. You will bring: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biomedical science–related field (postgraduate qualification preferred) Experience working in a chemical or biomedical laboratory environment Knowledge of good practice in chemical handling and chemical safety Experience working with hazardous chemicals and/or chemical safety (preferred) Ability to provide clear advice and guidance to staff and students Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What we offer The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading university and maintains significant computational, laboratory and analytic facilities.
