You’ll like being at work.   ABOUT THE ROLE Reporting to the Coordinator, Hazard Trees, the Technician, Hazard Trees supports the management of hazard trees on CVC-owned and managed properties. This position supports and conducts hazard tree inventory and assessment, monitoring, and mitigation of trees that pose a risk to health and safety, infrastructure and property. The primary areas of hazard tree management will be along trails, property boundaries, and in other public and staff use areas such as event spaces, school and other program areas, buildings and other work areas. The position will also provide arboricultural guidance to colleagues and parks staff.   QUALIFICATIONS * Post-secondary degree or diploma in Forestry, Arboriculture, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science or equivalent * I.S.A. Certified Arborist (or equivalent provincial qualification) or working towards certification  * Chainsaw operator’s training/certification  * Ontario “G” Driver’s license in good standing required * Working at Heights Certification preferred * Valid certificate in Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) from the I.S.A. considered an asset * Valid Ontario Pesticide Exterminator license (Forestry) considered an asset * Minimum 2 years relevant work experience in arboriculture and hazard tree management * Proven experience in data collection/inventory, identification and assessment of risk trees * Demonstrated advanced felling, pruning and rigging, and other mitigation/removal of risk trees following recognized arboriculture techniques. * Proven experience performing aerial tree rescue * Proven experience with the safe operation of chainsaws, chippers, pesticide application and RTV’s * Proven experience with the safe transportation, loading, and unloading of trailers Knowledge Skills and Ability * Demonstrated knowledge of arboriculture, resource management principles, forest management and habitat restoration ecology and their application * Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills * Excellent tree identification skills in both summer and winter conditions * Able to identify common tree pests and diseases * Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Access, GIS and Word * An understanding of occupational health and safety and related regulations to ensure a safe working environment for staff around the CVC Warwick facility and in the field * Ability to navigate using GPS, orthophotos or aerial imagery * Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions * In-depth knowledge of safety equipment, regulations and techniques required to perform arboricultural activities safely   SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS  Administration, Program Planning, Development and Support * Support the development, maintenance, and implementation of a hazard tree management program on CVC properties * Support the sourcing, purchasing, and procurement of materials and equipment * Maintain accurate and ongoing records of inventory, materials, supplies, and equipment * Maintain daily work ledgers and track program and project resource inputs * Prepare inventory, monitoring, mitigation, and other arboriculture reports as needed. * Support the Coordinator, Hazard Trees, and Mar/Comm staff in the preparation of communications tactics and delivery where required for abatement operations in high-risk, high-user areas. Program Implementation  * Conduct the fieldwork for risk tree inventory and assessment, monitoring, and implement required tree maintenance using recognized arboriculture practices on CVC-managed properties * Perform Level 1 and 2 risk tree (TRAQ) assessments, as well as tree risk mitigation that includes climbing, pruning, felling and removing hazard trees following recognized arboricultural practices in a safe and controlled manner that may include advanced techniques * Conduct basic equipment maintenance such as chainsaw sharpening and other minor repairs as well as inspecting ropes and harnesses  * Operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment which includes trucks, trailers, woodchippers, farm tractors (with implements), RTVs, ATVs, sprayers, and a wide variety of handheld power tools * Support the implementation of the Forestry program and projects as needed Supervision and Leadership * Supervise, train and lead field staff in the delivery of risk tree management including assessments and mitigation/removal * Assist in the hiring, training, performance evaluation and supervision of hourly/field staff and ensure the completion of assigned duties * Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to staff (direct and indirect reports) in their work, career development and to ensure CVC values and behaviours are followed * Conduct work in a safe manner and provide and enforce health and safety training of staff to ensure a safe working environment And other duties and tasks as appropriate to the position   To apply for this opportunity, click on the ‘Apply’ button and submit a resume and cover letter in one Word or PDF file, and upload using only the ‘Resume’ option.
