The lab of María Angélica Bravo Núñez in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is seeking a highly motivated candidate to work in a research lab dedicated to studying chromosome segregation in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Primary responsibility will be assisting in the research activities in the lab. Specifically, the individual will be responsible for preparing reagents and media, modifying yeast strains, generate crosses with yeasts strain using tetrad dissection, performing microscopy analyses of yeast mutant strains, and analyzing long and short sequencing data.

Technician responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in conducting research experiments using techniques such as basic molecular biology (e.g., bacterial cell culture, bacterial cell transformation, plasmid DNA preparation), PCR amplification of genomic and plasmid DNA, genetic crosses between yeasts strains, standard genetic assays, DNA library preparation for whole genome sequencing, and light and fluorescent confocal microscopy under the supervision of Dr. Bravo Núñez.
  • Analyzing sequencing data from publicly available datasets and sequencing data generated in our lab.
  • Participating in lab meetings and reading relevant scientific literature.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An Associate’s degree in a field of science, including but not limited to genetics or molecular biology.
  • Laboratory experience is required. Bioinformatics experience is required.
  • Must be personable, flexible, proactive, demonstrating a positive “can do” attitude, possess excellent organizational and communication skills and take pride in their work.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to maintain a comprehensive, up to date and accurate research lab notebook.
  • Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity are required.
  • Must be able to work independently after sufficient training, as well as in a team environment to accomplish required tasks.
  • Should be comfortable with basic computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, and Google Docs.
  • Familiar with basic molecular biological, cell biological, and biochemical techniques.
  • Able to work under general supervision and proceed alone on regular tasks.
  • Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related subject. Knowledge of genetics, evolutionary biology, and basic bioinformatics is necessary.
