What is a Technology Project Manager?
A Technology Project Manager reports to the Technology PMO Program Manager and leverages Central Hudson Technology Project Management methodology to deliver moderate to large scale projects within scope, schedule, and cost criteria. This position drives the initiation, planning, design, testing, and delivery stages of technology projects in a matrix environment to achieve measurable business objectives. The Technology Project Manager oversees the entire project lifecycle from initiation (intake) through transition to operations (project closure)
What does a Technology Project Manager do?
People/Team
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills to drive collaborative project deliveries and promote the value of project management across the organization
- Manages vendor relationships throughout the duration of related projects and collaborates with vendor implementation resources to ensure alignment of expectations and deliverables
- Collaborates with stakeholders to create project artifacts that align within the appropriate stage of project execution (i.e. scope, schedule, budget, test plan, communication plan, education plan, activation plan, & change control)
- Drives critical, time-sensitive discussions related to risks, issues, dependencies, and decision points with stakeholders and collaborates with the team to develop corresponding action plans
- Actively contributes to the evolution of the IT PMO (Project Management Office) by recommending new efficiency-based processes, educating stakeholders on the value of project management, providing feedback during team discussions, and owning development and implementation of approved changes
- Understands and applies Organizational Change Management principles to projects to ensure effective communication and adoption
- Provides support during storm restoration efforts
Project Management, Financial Strength & Risk Management
- Leverages PMBOK, Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) Waterfall, SDLC Iterative, and Agile project management frameworks to define project governance, manage risks, and drive the delivery of projects within scope, schedule, and cost constraints
- Consistently provides effective status reporting that contains the appropriate level of actionable detail for Executive, Sponsor-level, and project team recipients
- Creates and maintains accurate project estimates, budgets, and actively manages cost forecasts throughout the project
- Executes proper change control processes to provide transparency and effectively manage scope, schedule, and cost
- Proficiently leverages Project Management tools such as MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, PPM and budgeting software to ensure high-quality project deliveries
- Adheres to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to change management, incident reporting, time accounting, expense reporting, purchase requisition processes, and compliance requirements
Technology
- Ability to understand technical constraints, dependencies, and frameworks to ensure the delivery of a high-quality solution
- Partner with technical leads and vendors to ensure the translation of requirements into comprehensive test plans and technical solutions (Requirements Traceability)
- Demonstrate technical acumen to ensure project team executes high-quality design, testing, and cutover activities
What does it take to be a Technology Project Manager?
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration or related field of study. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree with 3+ years of project management or related experience. In lieu of a degree, a high school diploma or equivalent and 5+ years of project management or related experience will be considered
- 3+ years of professional experience formally leading projects within a cross-functional environment
- Strong experience working within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) Waterfall and Iterative models
- Ability to tactfully drive indirect reports and pivot while maintaining order in a fast-paced business environment
- Experience providing a service to internal stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes
- Demonstrated capability for problem solving, decision making, sound judgment, assertiveness
- Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong presentation skills and the ability to conduct presentations to large groups
- Strong relationship building and interpersonal skills
- Experienced user of MS Project and MS Office toolset (Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint)
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred:
- Project Management Professional (PMP), Six Sigma, or Agile certification
- Experience working on Customer Experience (CX) Projects
- Experience working on projects that included Web/Mobile enhancements
- Experience working in Software Development and Test Organizations
- Experience in Energy & Utilities or services industry
- Experience with SAP implementations or optimizations
- Experience with PPM tools (e.g. UMT360, JIRA, Planview, ServiceNow, Project Server Online, etc.)
- Experience in a consultative role with an implementation service organization or start-up
