Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE: TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER MANAGER

The NIHR Intellectual Property Unit supports the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) with expert guidance on IP, commercial, and contractual matters across the NIHR portfolio. We’re seeking a Technology Transfer Manager to help ensure that NIHR-funded intellectual property is effectively identified, managed, and translated into impactful health and care outcomes in the UK and beyond.
You’ll lead and support initiatives to enhance IP management and integration across the UK health research ecosystem. The role involves managing commercialisation cases, resolving complex IP queries, and contributing to strategic process improvements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support delivery of the NIHR IP work plan and manage core IP Unit processes
  • Lead a portfolio of commercialisation cases, negotiating return models and preparing briefing notes for DHSC
  • Provide IP advice via regular Open Sessions and respond to NIHR staff queries
  • Deliver IP training to NIHR programme staff and funded organisations
  • Improve IP Unit tools, systems, and processes
  • Ensure consistent IP management across project lifecycles—from application to closure
  • Liaise with legal advisors, commercial partners, research teams, and NIHR stakeholders
  • Represent NIHR on relevant committees and working groups
  • Draft progress reports, respond to FOIs and parliamentary queries
  • Maintain and update the NIHR IP Unit’s website and materials
  • Contribute to quality assurance and cross-NIHR coordination efforts
  • This role suits a collaborative, detail-oriented professional with a strong understanding of IP, commercialisation, and the UK research landscape
