GMP Recruitment are proud to be working with a leading Telecommunications service provider based in Southport. We are recruiting on their behalf for a highly experienced and self-sufficient Telecommunications Engineer to support a high-profile data landing site. The successful candidate will be joining their team on a rolling contract basis.
This is not a junior or entry-level IT role — candidates must demonstrate a strong background in data centre environments and hands-on telecoms infrastructure, including optical networking and vendor-specific equipment.
This is an ongoing contractor role, paid weekly at £200 per day, working outside of IR35.

Telecommunications Engineer Main Responsibilities:

• Installation and deinstallation of hardware (rack and stack) in live data centre environments
• Fibre optic patching, cabling, and testing (single mode/multi-mode)
• Working independently on customer sites with minimal supervision
• Accurate labelling and documentation of cabling and hardware
• Fault finding, diagnostics, and use of test equipment for infrastructure issues
• Escorting third-party contractors and clients on-site
• Supporting day-to-day site maintenance and upgrades
• Travel to additional UK-based data centre locations as required

Telecommunications Engineer required skills and experience:

• Extensive hands-on experience in data centre (DC) environments
• Proficient in fibre optic cabling, patching, splicing, and use of test equipment
• Previous work at telecom landing stations or with submarine cable systems
• Vendor certifications (Ciena, Infinera, etc.)
• Electrical/optical signal testing certifications
• Knowledge of optical networking and vendor-specific equipment such as Infinera, Ciena, ADVA, or similar
• Proven ability to work autonomously in a telecoms environment (landing stations or similar)
• Clear documentation skills for infrastructure and changes
• Familiarity with DC best practices, safety standards, and cabling protocols
