OVERVIEW:

Merrick & Company (www.merrick.com) is an employee- owned engineering, architecture, surveying, and geospatial firm, headquartered in Colorado, with offices and employees located throughout North America and in the United Kingdom. Merrick seeks a Temporary Payroll Manager who will oversee and supervise Merrick’s payroll function for over 1000 employees, ensuring payroll is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations.
This position will ensure our payroll is processed in accordance with our time and labor policies both within and outside the United States. Depending on project needs, Merrick may occasionally run payroll for union employees as well. This position will collaborate and work closely with our payroll provider, UKG, and Human Resources to ensure accuracy of payroll expense for the organization. The Payroll Manager reports to the Assistant Controller while maintaining a close working relationship with the Human Resources Department.
This position requires a motivated professional with strong reporting and process skills and a positive, problem-solving attitude. Merrick is growing and needs an individual experienced with streamlining processes and putting updated policies in place. Strongly prefer an individual with experience using payroll software report-writing tools.
Merrick is headquartered in Colorado, but has offices and employees located across the United States in approximately 14 states, and Canada, the United Kingdom and Mexico.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field preferred.
  • Seven to ten years of payroll and accounting related experience required.
  • Preferred experience in processing union and international payrolls.
  • Attention to detail and highly organized. Must be adept at managing multiple priorities and act independently to meet all required deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills; this role will interact with all levels throughout the organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. This role requires managing companywide communications as well as individual communications related to employees’ personal financial situations.
  • Strong experience in process and change management and working in changing and challenging situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and act professionally.
  • Advanced PC skills in preparing, navigating, and analyzing databases, Excel spreadsheets, accounting software/systems, and PowerPoint presentations.
Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing to ensure timely and accurate processing of all payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions in all locations in which Merrick operates.
  • US and Canada payrolls are run bi-weekly and on the same cycle.
  • As needed, ensures our weekly payroll is processed in accordance with applicable union contracts.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Ensures accuracy of the organization’s tax reporting and manages correspondence between UKG and the respective states and countries in which Merrick operates.
  • Facilitates audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.
  • Performs payroll set-up in the system, including pay calendars and holidays.
  • Manages and communicates with seconded employees who require tax withholdings in all states and countries in which Merrick operates.
  • Performs reconciliations as needed, including timekeeping against third party invoices for seconded employees utilized by Merrick.
  • Establishes and maintains payroll processes and policies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage payroll associates who are responsible for managing the timesheet process, reviewing timesheets, and processing payroll transactions for, among other things, new hires, terminations, promotions, and pay rate changes.
