Description

The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.
We are now looking for

WHO ARE YOU?

We are looking for a talented researcher with a strong background in environmental hydraulics, and/or hydrology, and numerical modeling to support ecosystem scale restoration research actions in the Safire Profi8 program and University of Oulu profilation. We encourage visionary researchers with different hydraulics, hydrodynamic, hydrology or water research backgrounds, including riverine, catchment, groundwater and/or peatlands topics to apply. We expect you to support the strategic aim to renew the scientific profile of the University of Oulu.
We invite applications from candidates with academic backgrounds in hydrology, hydraulics, water engineering, environmental sciences or other related fields and strong numerical modelling skills. The advantage is a demonstrated understanding of multidisciplinary approaches and implementations. The appointed candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with other SAFIRE subthemes at the University of Oulu. Tenure position will be linked to ongoing DIWA – Digital Waters flagship activities leading to interdisciplinary research using technical and numerical approaches. The work involves the development of digital solutions, including monitoring, data management and modelling for ecosystem scale restoration needs.

The research topics include but are not limited to:

  • Various fields of computational environmental hydraulics and/or ecohydrological approaches with linkage to ecosystem restoration actions
  • Application of numerical and mathematical models for quantifying environmental hydraulics and/or ecohydrological impacts of climate, land use and ecosystem scale changes
  • Collaborating in multidisciplinary teams to co-design and develop computational environmental hydraulics and/or ecohydrological methods and solutions to support social-ecological challenges

We expect interdisciplinary research vision as well as strong collaboration and networking capabilities. Our tenure track (Assistant and Associate Professor) is positioned for exceptionally talented researchers with a high potential to advance in their careers.
You are expected to hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field. Because this is an interdisciplinary position, depending on the position level, we expect vision (assistant) or demonstrated experience (associate professor) in interdisciplinary approaches in research.
The general criteria for each career level are as follows:
Qualifications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position: You must demonstrate the ability to work independently and have relevant teaching skills. In order to be eligible for a position as Assistant Professor, you must have received your doctoral degree not more than ten years ago.
Qualifications for a tenure track Associate Professor position: You must demonstrate evidence of scholarly research work and relevant teaching skills. You must have the ability to lead research as well as have experience in acquiring external research funding. We also expect you to have sufficient and relevant experience in international scientific work and evidence of international cooperation.
