We are inviting applications for a tenure track position (Professor [Full] or Associate Professor) in International relations. The position is in the Politics Unit and serves the needs of the Faculty of Management and Business more broadly.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished academic to

  • conduct, organize and supervise high-quality scientific research
  • offer research-based teaching
  • engage in societal interaction and international academic collaboration
  • commit to developing the discipline as a whole and as an integral part of the activities of the Politics Unit
  • strengthen the Unit’s external income, particularly research funding

The Politics Unit hosts the degree programme in Politics with a wide coverage of subjects. The bachelor’s programme combines the core areas of political science and international relations. On the master’s level, the Unit’s international relations staff offers teaching in three specialization options: European studies, world politics and peace and conflict research, and contribute to the international security specialization option in the Faculty’s Master’s programme in Security Management and Politics. To fully contribute to this teaching programme and underpinning research, we expect the candidate to have a wide knowledge of IR theory and methodology and the ability to teach in one of specialization options in line with the curriculum. The appointed candidate will be responsible for master’s thesis supervision and for study units to be agreed covering some of the following topics: European integration and Finland’s neighborhood, foreign policy, international order, energy and environment, peace and conflict research as well as security studies.

REQUIREMENTS

The task requires good communication skills in English and Finnish (or a strong motivation to learn Finnish as the teaching program is mainly in Finnish). In addition, we require:

Professor:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • high-level scholarly expertise
  • experience of leading scientific research activities
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
  • track record of winning external research funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity
  • track record of supervising doctoral dissertations
  • strong experience in teaching and good teaching skills
  • track record of societal impact

Associate Professor:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • track record of independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity
  • track record of continuous, increasing and high-level research activities
  • experience of societal impact

The top candidates will be interviewed. If necessary, aptitude assessment may also be used. In addition, the candidates may be required to demonstrate their teaching skills. The shortlisted candidates will be evaluated by external experts.
