Description Title: Firefighter/Paramedic Fulltime FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Department: Fire Department Essential Status: Essential Division: Pay Grade: B,C,D Reports to: Fire Lieutenant BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Firefighter is a front-line public servant, who performs the full array of duties assigned to a Firefighter/Paramedic including: emergency medical response and providing basic and advanced life support; combats fires; protects life and property; operates and maintains firefighting equipment and fire station; participates in fire prevention activities including effective inspections, public education and enforcement of codes; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally assists in the training of other Firefighter positions; performs related duties as required. ALL APPLICANTS MUST BE CERTIFIED AS CURRENT TEXAS BASIC FIREFIGHTER AND PARAMEDIC AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION SUBMISSION. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to: Lieutenant Directs: None Other: Will have dealings with all employees and general public EXAMPLES OF WORK: Perform general fire suppression, prevention and emergency medical functions quickly and efficiently on an assigned apparatus. Respond to both non-emergency and emergency fire, rescue and medical emergencies safely, efficiently and effectively. Have good knowledge of modern principles, practices and procedures of the department and related department regulations. Have good knowledge and skills in the use of and care of all fire and EMS equipment. Have good knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures. Take an active part in all training sessions, participate in public education programs. Participate in emergency management activities as required. Perform cleaning and maintenance on equipment and facilities. Accurately and professionally prepare reports and maintain files. Maintain physical activity over prolonged periods of time including walking, kneeling and stooping in awkward positions, and moving/lifting heavy objects up to 100 pounds. May be required to perform other duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Strong knowledge of city and departmental policy, and local, state, and federal laws. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills. Ability to think clearly and act decisively under pressure. Proficient with computers, report writing software, and standard fire and EMS tools. Physical ability to perform the duties. CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED: High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred. Must be a certified Texas Basic Firefighter and Paramedic or eligible for licensing through TCFP and TDSHS. Must be at least 18 years of age. Valid Texas driver’s license with acceptable driving record. No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS & CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The firefighter job position requires both office-based work and field presence during emergency responses and training evolutions. Must be able to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Physical ability to perform firefighting and emergency medical tasks when required. May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry and vision to monitor. May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions. May involve physical exertion and exposure to potentially dangerous or life-threatening situations. Must be able to pass physical fitness tests, drug screening, and comprehensive background check.
