Position Information Title: Theater Technical Director Division/Office: School of Humanities, Arts, and Design Part Time Non-exempt   II. Position Summary The Technical Director has the daily responsibility for the technical operations of Chaminade’s black box theatre and productions in the theatre, including lighting, sound, set design and construction, and coordinating necessary equipment maintenance. The Technical Director is expected to carry out these responsibilities independent of specific oversight, collaborating with the other production principals.    III. Reports to Direct Report to: the Performing Arts Director and the Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts and Design   IV. Duties and Responsibilities * Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities. (5% of work) * In advance of production dates, determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility and at the theatre, as well as for a musical theatre production at a larger theatre venue. (20% of work) * Designs, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting and sound systems for theatre, dance, music, and other productions and projects; assists others using the theatre with technical matters. (30% of work) * Advises production managers, directors, and lighting and sound designers on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for individual shows, and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs. (5% of work) * Supervises and assists with set and stage construction and management. (15% of work) * Assists in recruiting, training and assignment of university students and other volunteer or paid technical staff for individual shows. (5% of work) * Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs or arranges for preventive maintenance on equipment. (5%) * Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies. (5%) * Makes recommendations to the theatre leadership and Division Dean regarding capital purchases of technical and other theatre equipment. (5%) * Provides assistance and advice to other campus groups in technical aspects for performance events on campus (when requested and when appropriate) (5%) V. Education and Experience Minimum Education  * At least two to three years’ experience in theatre technical work * College graduate desirable Experience and Skills  * Ability to work with Dean, faculty, and students in a professional manner. * Working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theater, dance and music production. * Working knowledge of presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.     VII. Physical Requirements Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills.  Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.   VIII. Other Requirements * This is a part time and non-exempt position. Up to Nineteen (19) hours per week will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required.  Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and have a varying schedule when required * Performs such similar, comparable or related duties as may be assigned or required * Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University.
