ROLE SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Radiology Services and Business Manager (RSBM), Radiography Services Managers (RSMs) or designate, the Hybrid and Theatre Clinical Specialist Radiographer will perform a pivotal role in service planning, co-ordinating, managing activity, and allocated resources within the theatre complex.
The post holder will be an active member of the multi-disciplinary team and will lead and supervise radiographic and other staff in the theatre complex resulting in the delivery of an efficient, effective, and quality theatre radiography service.
The Hybrid and Theatre Clinical Specialist Radiographer will be responsible for the provision of radiation protection within the theatre environment, reducing the risks of any adverse radiation effects in compliance with local policies, national legislation, and international regulations. They will be primarily responsible for ensuring that imaging in the theatre complex is performed to a high standard of technical quality in a caring and efficient manner and in line with established guidelines and operating procedures.
This role encompasses quality assurance, staff development and effective communication while providing professional and clinical leadership. This position requires the ability to lead, guide and supervise staff in a rapidly changing environment, and the willingness to undertake additional duties as may be assigned from time to time. This will be achieved in conjunction with the RSBM, RSMI and the IIRCD Management Team. To note in Beaumont Hospital the Radiographer is responsible for all the practical aspects of medical radiation exposure and the hybrid and theatre clinical specialist is expected to lead on this.
The Hybrid and Theatre Clinical Specialist Radiographer is expected to assist the RSM1/RSBM in the delivery of efficient and effective radiography service both within the theatre complex and the radiology department and must function integrally within the Radiology team and have proficiency in other modalities in order to participate in 24/7 services.
Responsibilities:
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Operations:
- Reporting to the Radiology Services and Business Manager (RSBM), Radiography Services Managers (RSMs) or their designate, the position of Clinical Specialist Radiographer in the Hybrid and Theatre requires an ability to lead, guide and supervise radiographic staff in the assigned area and to successfully manage service delivery on a day to day basis.
- Provide management support and leadership both in the Theatre complex and the radiology department.
- Maintain a calm and controlled style across all situations demonstrating behaviour consistent with the values of the hospital.
- Use professional expertise and management experience to understand and evaluate problems and demonstrate sound practical judgment and decisiveness.

- Ensure good communication between all stakeholders (ADON/CNMs/Medical Practitioner) who work in the operating theatres and radiology.
- Ensure the delivery of an efficient and caring service to patients.

- Ensure that best practice and quality service principles are adhered to on a daily basis.
- Supervise and organise work as appropriate in the rapidly changing environment.
- Lead the development and implementation of operational policies, protocols and guidelines.
- Participate in planning and development of the service in conjunction with other staff as appropriate.
- Provide advice as required on equipment selection, purchase, and replacement or upgrading.
- Provide administrative support to the appointment system to ensure good workflow practices.
- Report and investigate the following as appropriate:
o Complaints from patients.
o Accidents involving staff, patients or members of the general public.
o Damage to equipment.
- Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
- To carry out his/her duties under the supervision RSBM / RSMs or such other person designated for that purpose by the Chief Executive or designated officer.
- Participate in and support role extension as appropriate.
- Be respectful of the confidential nature of the role, in particular the patient’s right to confidentiality.
- Read and adhere to all relevant policies, procedures and guidelines of Beaumont Imaging & Interventional Radiology Directorate.
- Be aware that the highest standard of hygiene must be maintained in the Hospital at all times and all staff members are responsible for ensuring compliance with the Hospitals requirements and standards with regard to hygiene.
- Ensure that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. Each staff member is individually responsible for ensuring that the Hospital remains a safe place to work.
- Be appropriate in the use of Information Technology and mindful of Confidentiality Law and Ethics, Privacy and Data Protection.
- To participate in the on call rota as deemed necessary by the RSBM /RSMs.
Radiation Safety:
- Ensure that appropriate referral screening procedures are adhered to.
- Promote the ALARA principle.
- Maintain and update knowledge of European and national legislation and guidelines regarding medical ionising radiation protection.
- Stay current with all relevant radiation safety legislation in Ireland, including competent authorities’ standards (HIQA and the EPA).
- Take a lead role in addressing radiation-related events, ensuring prompt investigation, documentation, and appropriate corrective action. Ensuring timely reporting to both local risk management and the competent authority when necessary.
- Maintains a records/logs of all radiation events.
- In collaboration with the RPU, manage and monitor the personnel radiation dosimetry program, ensuring staff wear dosimeters as required, and reviewing dosimetry reports for compliance dose limits.
- Regularly inspect and maintain radiation safety equipment, including QA for personnel lead PPE. Ensure integrity and effectiveness of safety implements and maintain a record of these checks. Disposal of personnel radiation PPE should be in accordance with local guidelines.
- In collaboration with the RSO /RPO, develop, implement, and maintain a Quality Assurance (QA) programme for x-ray equipment, radiation measuring devices, and radiation safety implements. Ensure that radiation doses are within ALARA and identify KEY areas of improvements eg. DRLs and audits.
Staff Management:
- Lead by example by being punctual and professional, and foster dedication within the team.
- Encourage open communication, healthy working relationships, and initiatives within the hospital.
- Motivate team members by setting and agreeing upon clear goals and objectives.
- Prioritise teamwork and only, when necessary, act in accordance with the hospital’s disciplinary policy.
- Under the direction of the RSBM, serves as an integral member the radiology management team.
Education and Training:
- Identify training needs of new staff in equipment and procedures specific to theatre complex.
- Responsible for the training of all Radiographers and other staff as appropriate. Inform the RSBM or designate of the progress of each Radiographer throughout their training.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of clinical, technical, and professional developments relating to Radiography / operating procedures.
- Staying updated on latest practices and technologies in radiation safety, recommending and implementing improvements where feasible.
- Participate in mandatory training programmes as described.
- Ensure that all staff mandatory training is complete and up to date in line with hospital guidelines (BORIS). These include hygiene and infection control training, radiation safety, manual handling, fire training and basic life support.
- Provide peer support and facilitate continuing training, education, and research activities for Radiographers.
- Maintain and update the operating theatre imaging protocols and training manuals as required.
- Actively participate in continuing education and research activities.
Strategic Management:
- To support the RSBM in the JCI accreditation process.
- To assist with the development and implementation of Risk Management and Health and Safety strategies.
- To actively participate in the continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.
- As the financial function is devolved within the organisation contribute to financial planning and ensure that appropriate budgetary procedures are implemented.
