PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 1–2 years of experience in underground utility work preferred.
  • Understanding of utility pipe installation process and trench safety procedures.
  • Ability to read grade stakes and operate a pipe laser is a plus.
  • Effective communication skills, especially in coordinating with equipment operators and trench crew.
  • Strong awareness of job site safety and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 50 lbs) and work in all weather conditions.
  • Team-oriented with strong communication skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to safety and quality.
  • Must be safety-conscious, reliable, and able to work well in a team environment.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, early mornings, and weekends as needed.
  • High school education or GED equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary support to the Bottom Person and operator during trench operations.
  • Manage and organize materials at the surface (pipe, fittings, tools, bedding stone, etc.).
  • Lower tools, pipe, and equipment safely into trenches using hand signals or mechanical assistance.
  • Communicate trench conditions, material needs, and safety concerns to the operator and foreman.
  • Monitor and ensure trench safety, including checking for cave-ins, access/egress, and proper shoring or shielding.
  • Assist with reading and interpreting grade stakes, pipe laser settings, and layout plans.
  • Perform basic measurements and use grade rods, levels, and lasers to confirm slope and alignment.
  • Assist with site prep, layout, and cleanup activities.
  • Help guide equipment operators during excavation, backfilling, and grading tasks.
  • Follow all safety protocols and report any hazards or issues to the foreman promptly.
  • Display a professional and respectful attitude towards co-workers, supervisors, inspectors, and the general public at all times.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors.
  • Follow company and industry safety standards and procedures at all times.
