PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in international business, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in trade compliance, with a focus on the North American market, and predominantly on imports.
  • Procurement experience is an asset.
  • Steel industry experience is strongly preferred.
  • A keen understanding of trade compliance, import/export regulations, and industry-specific requirements to support seamless and compliant cross-border transactions.
  • Proficient in classification and HS code determination for steel wire products.
  • Familiarity with trade agreements (e.g., USMCA) and their application.
  • Understanding of anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties as they relate to steel products.
  • Strong ability to interpret and apply complex trade regulations.
  • Attention to detail in reviewing documentation and identifying risks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with internal teams, customs officials, and external partners.

Responsibilities

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are seeking a detail-oriented Trade Compliance and Procurement Specialist. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with international trade laws and regulations for the North American market, specifically within the steel industry with a focus on wire and wire products. The candidate will also support the procurement manager with key sourcing and procurement activities to support production. This role requires membership in the MoveUP Union, Local 378.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor and ensure adherence to trade compliance policies and procedures across the company’s supply chain operations
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of North American trade regulations, including tariffs and sanctions imposed by Canada and the US on various countries.
  • Assign accurate Harmonized System (HS) codes to products, with a specific focus on steel wire and wire products.
  • Ensure proper application of duty rates, exemptions, and trade agreements to optimize cost efficiency.
  • Identify and address potential compliance risks in trade operations.
  • Conduct internal audits to verify compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to resolve trade compliance issues.
  • Work closely with Procurement and Logistics teams to ensure efficient and compliant import/export operations.
  • Serve as the point of contact for customs brokers regarding trade-related inquiries.
  • Support the Procurement Manager with the purchase of goods and services to obtain maximum value for Tree Island. Value is determined by cost, required specifications (including safety specifications), quality and delivery time.
  • Develop and evolve sourcing and procurement strategies, lead sourcing and procurement initiatives, and coordinate sourcing and procurement activities.
  • Act as the conduit between supplier and key business stakeholders, to rectify issues and implement improvements.
  • Negotiate with and manage suppliers, to ensure the competitiveness and effectiveness of the manufacturing operations and the competitiveness and quality of our product offerings.
