The Department of Environmental Services (DES) , Water Sewer Streets (WSS) Bureau, is seeking a Trades Leader for Water Maintenance to join our team and supervise 12 technicians that provide and ensure an adequate supply of quality water for domestic services and fire protection by investigating and repairing leaks, installing new service connections, and maintaining system pressure and flow.

Specific duties include:

  • Supervising and performing along with a crew on-site in a variety of technical procedures such as repairing water mains, and completing water service installations;
  • Scheduling crew work and ensuring the crew is able to complete work safely using appropriate technical equipment and following applicable County regulations, laws, and accident prevention measures;
  • Reviewing blueprints, accurately measuring for installation or repair projects, and implementing traffic control plans to ensure safety during maintenance activities;
  • Providing training and monitoring employees in the use of a variety of specialized equipment, technical procedures, and safety methods;
  • Responding, communicating with, and mobilizing the team in emergency situations and resolving site issues as they arise, and ensuring safety precautions are taken;
  • Ensuring resources, supplies, tools, materials, and equipment are available;
  • Performing administrative functions such as time reporting, activity reports, billing coordination, and personal injury, accident, and vehicle reports; and
  • Interacting with citizens, contractors, Miss Utility locators, engineers, and surveyors; and on-site facility maintenance staff.

The ideal candidate will be a team player and problem solver, able to work collaboratively with stakeholders, and possess:

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience leading and training entry to senior level trades workers;
  • Excellent reading, writing, and arithmetic skills for reading technical materials, composing reports and performing calculations; and
  • Experience managing projects, and training and evaluating trades workers.

Minimum Requirements :

  • High School Diploma/equivalent;
  • Three (3) years of trades work experience in water distribution, water utility maintenance, or similar environment;
  • Experience providing leadership to trades workers and/or managing trades projects; and
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL A or B).

Desirable : Preference may be given to candidates with experience and/or certification in one or more of the following:

  • Operating maintenance management software, SCADA, and utilizing office administration software to perform administrative functions;
  • Providing maintenance and operation of water valves and fire hydrants;
  • Performing installation of water mains, domestic services, water valves and water vaults;
  • Operating backhoe and front-end loader; and/orPossession of a Virginia Water Works Operator Class 5 license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. Driver’s License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license to perform duties at other locations. If the applicant possesses or acquires a driver’s license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant’s driving record.

  • This position requires learning and following all safety rules and regulations pertaining to job functions which include attending all required safety classes and meetings in order to ensure a safe working environment and to ensure team members are practicing the required safety rules and regulations.Work is performed in a combination of office and outdoors environments. Outdoor conditions may include all types of weather, moving traffic, exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.
