Traffic Design Engineer, EI or PE Department: Transportation Employment Type: Full Time Location: Charlotte, NC Description DRMP is seeking a motivated Traffic Design Engineer to join our growing Transportation team. This role is ideal for an engineer with a passion for traffic operations, safety, and roadway design support, who is eager to contribute to impactful transportation projects across North Carolina and beyond. Your engineering assignments may include signal and intelligent transportation systems design, signing, pavement marking, work zone traffic control, and supporting DOT and municipal transportation projects. You’ll be working closely with roadway designers, planners, and senior traffic engineers to develop high-quality traffic plans and technical documentation. What You'll Do: Perform traffic engineering and traffic design tasks for roadway, intersection, and corridor improvement projects. Assist with the preparation of traffic signal and signal communication plans, signing and pavement marking plans, and work zone traffic control plans in accordance with MUTCD and state DOT standards. Prepare technical memoranda, reports, and documentation for DOT and municipal clients. Coordinate with roadway, drainage, and planning teams to ensure traffic design integration. Apply DOT, MUTCD, and local agency standards to traffic design tasks. Assist senior engineers with data collection and field observations. Participate in client meetings and coordination with reviewing agencies as needed. What you'll need Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited university. EIT certification preferred. 0–4+ years of traffic engineering experience supporting DOT or municipal transportation projects. Working knowledge of traffic design software, such as MicroStation, ORD, AutoCAD, or similar tools. Familiarity with traffic signal design, signing and pavement marking, and traffic operations concepts. Understanding of MUTCD, AASHTO, and state DOT standards (NCDOT experience preferred). Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
