This position is responsible for the installation and maintenance of the city-wide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and other related electrical and electronic equipment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Will be required daily to check systems inside the TMC for correct operation and report issues needing to be addressed. Coordinate projects with other traffic signal technicians. Must be able to test and program, using various applications, ITS devices with the use of a laptop computer. Perform annual inspection and maintenance on all traffic signal equipment, hardware, cameras and network devices at each of the signalized intersections within the city. Must have the ability to set up safe work zones and wear proper personal protective equipment when necessary. Input and maintain accurate records pertaining to maintenance and emergency call outs. Locates traffic signal underground utilities in the field that includes fiber optics, cables, conduits when needed. Able to identify issues with, then troubleshoot and repair network components including fiber optics, CCTV cameras, network switches and servers used by the traffic department. Maintain inventory of traffic signal hardware and ITS components both already installed in the field and in storage as spare parts, request parts to be ordered when needed. Works with contractors, engineers and other utilities during design and construction. Repairs and maintains streetlights at various locations around the city and at several interstate ramps within the city limits. Repair, replace, re-lamp and hang Christmas lights around the city. Hang street signs, banners, flags and other items when needed for special events. Ability to work rotating on call schedule for after hours and weekend emergencies. Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY Ability to identify and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Knowledge of basic electricity. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees. Knowledge of the city service area and distribution system. Ability to test and repair traffic signal devices and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components. Ability to use good judgement in evaluating problem situations. EDUCATION Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent. Completion of at least one year of college in electrical or electronic engineering, computer technology coursework or related field is preferred. EXPERIENCE Must have three years of experience in traffic signal operation, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair. May be required to pass a comprehensive assessment to validate knowledge in lieu of desired years of experience. DRIVER LICENSE Valid Tennessee Driver License with class B CDL endorsement and clear driving record are required or must be able to obtain class B CDL within the first 90 days of employment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, AND REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to control tools, handle objects or controls, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift and/or move, push, pull and carry up to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to view far away objects, distinguish color, have depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus vision on objects. The employee must be able to perform manual labor While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly works in high, precarious places and in outside-weather conditions. The employee must have the capacity to climb ladders and work from aerial equipment with little fear of heights. The employees will frequently work at or around roadways close to moving vehicles, pedestrians and other construction equipment and at times can be a loud environment that requires a great deal of focus. Some work will be performed in the office environment. This is a safety sensitive position.
