Responsibilities
  • Assist the dentist during examinations and treatments, ensuring all necessary instruments are prepared and sterile.
  • Provide excellent patient care by reassuring patients, answering their queries, and ensuring their comfort throughout procedures.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and documentation using IT systems.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including infection control protocols.
  • Manage appointment scheduling and follow-up calls to ensure continuity of care.

    Key Responsibilities
    Clinical Duties (within GDC Scope of Practice)
    Some of these duties can only be performed on the prescription of a dentist or another
    GDC-registrant. You will be trained and supervised for these roles, if granted them.
    Prepare and maintain the clinical environment, including sterilizing equipment and
    ensuring compliance with CQC Regulation 15 (Premises and equipment).
    Carry out infection prevention and control procedures to prevent physical, chemical, and
    microbiological contamination in the surgery, adhering to HTM 01-05 guidelines.
    Record dental charting and oral tissue assessments as directed by other registrants
    (e.g., dentists, therapists).
    Support patients with special needs, ensuring accessibility and comfort during treatment.
    Take impressions, construct occlusal registration rims, special trays, mouthguards,
    bleaching trays, or vacuum-formed retainers to the prescription of a dentist.
    Process and manage dental radiographs and images to the prescription of a dentist, following completion of a GDC-approved radiography course.
    Apply topical anesthetic to the prescription of a dentist.
    Monitor, support, and reassure patients during treatment, using effective communication and behavioral techniques to manage anxiety.
    Obtain valid patient consent, explaining relevant factors in line with GDC Standard 3 and
    CQC Regulation 11 (Need for consent).
    Accurately record patient histories and oral health assessments, maintaining contemporaneous clinical records.
    Identify and report changes in patients’ reported oral health status, escalating to the dentist as needed.
    Participate in annual performance appraisals to review professional development, set objectives, and maintain competence, per CQC Regulation 18.
    Contribute to maintaining adequate staffing levels by communicating availability for shifts and supporting contingency planning (e.g., covering absences) to ensure CQC
    Regulation 18 (1) compliance.
    Non-Clinical Duties
    Perform reception and administrative tasks as delegated (e.g., booking appointments, managing patient records), ensuring compliance with Data Protection Act 2018 and CQC
    Regulation 17 (Good governance).
    Support practice compliance with CQC regulations, including audits, equipment maintenance logs, and incident reporting.
