TRAINEE ESTIMATOR

Fifields Construction are a leading construction and principal contractor based in Exeter, Devon delivering high end building schemes and packages in the commercial, industrial, healthcare and educational sectors. Established over 20 years ago, our work ranges from refurbishments, new builds and extensions, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects within specified time frames, on budget and to the highest standard of quality.
As a Trainee Estimator, you will mentored by our Senior Estimators, working closely with them and providing support in delivering competitive, high quality tender returns, shadowing them to learn our in-house estimating process. This involves working within an organised system, responding to deadlines and having an eye for detail.
Over time, you will take on responsibility for calculating costs and preparing detailed, accurate bids based on client requirements,

Your responsibilities will include,

• Sending enquiries/requesting quotes from our approved suppliers and subcontractors
• Analysing and comparing quotations and costs
• Completing take-offs and calculations from design drawings and schedule
• Assisting with multiple stage tenders, including completing preliminary costings and forms of tender
• Assistance with pre-qualification questionnaires and submissions
• Using historic rates and/or experience to price work
• Helping to promote and seek new tender opportunities in co-ordination with the Directors
• Assisting in preparing documents for tender adjudications
• Making site visits, conducting site surveys, taking photos for records and making observations as necessary for pricing purposes

You will be based in our Exeter office working with the Estimating Team. You will be required to make site visits around Devon as and when necessary, usually accompanied by one of the Senior Estimators. Working hours will be 8:00am until 5:00pm

• Support and funding of an Estimating/Surveying based course/career in Construction Estimating
• Mentorship from an experienced industry professional, including training and development of new skills

• An assistant/trainee estimator or assistant/trainee quantity surveyor
• Or you may have completed a construction-related course (HNC etc)
• Or you may have relevant transferable skills or experience from another role or industry
• A good telephone demeanour
• Excellent literacy and numeracy skills are essential with a good eye for detail
• A strong desire to learn and develop a career in estimating within the construction industry
• A proactive and organised approach to work, with the ability to manage time effectively
