We’re looking for a Trainee Maintenance Controller to join us in a permanent, full-time role, starting with a two-year, hands-on development programme designed to build the next generation of skilled maintenance and asset management professionals. This role is ideal for someone with a trade qualification, diploma, or degree in electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, or mechatronics, who wants to grow beyond the tools and into planning, coordination, and asset management. About the role As a Trainee Maintenance Controller, you’ll join Watercare in a permanent position, with your first two years focused on structured learning and development. You’ll rotate across key Watercare sites including Rosedale, Huia, Māngere, and Ardmore, working alongside experienced Maintenance Controllers and Operations teams. Over the two-year programme, you’ll develop the skills to: Support treatment plant performance and reliability Learn how maintenance work is planned, prioritised, and delivered Coordinate contractors and internal teams Understand asset condition, risk, and lifecycle costs Build capability in maintenance systems, budgeting, and compliance On successful completion of the programme, you’ll be well positioned to progress into ongoing maintenance or asset-related roles within Watercare. What you’ll be doing With support and supervision, you will: Assist with monitoring treatment plant performance and troubleshooting issues Learn to coordinate contractors and observe contract delivery Support planned maintenance programmes and work order completion Use maintenance management systems and learn asset criticality concepts Participate in team meetings and contribute to a “one team” culture Observe and assist with maintenance budgeting and cost tracking Complete a range of technical, safety, and professional development training What you’ll bring You’ll likely have: A relevant trade qualification, diploma, or certificate in electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, or mechatronics Some hands-on experience in a technical, plant, manufacturing, or industrial environment An interest in water, wastewater, or critical infrastructure Good numerical and problem-solving ability A genuine desire to learn, ask questions, and grow A full, clean drivers licence and a willingness to commute throughout Auckland.
