HE KŌRERO MŌ MĀTOU | ABOUT US

At KiwiRail, we’re building a stronger, more connected Aotearoa. Our work keeps people and goods moving efficiently and sustainably across the country. From engineering to operations, every team plays a role in delivering safe, reliable rail services.
As part of Network Services, you’ll be working with people who take pride in their mahi, look after each other, and contribute to a network that’s vital to communities and businesses across New Zealand.

We’re looking for team players who are reliable, eager to learn, and committed to safety.

Essential:

  • EWRB electrical registration in NZ
  • NCEA Level 1 in Maths, English and Science (or equivalent)
  • A full Class 1 driver’s licence
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to work outdoors
  • Basic experience in manual or labouring work
  • Good communication and teamwork skills

Desirable (but not required):

  • Class 2 driver’s licence

  • Prior rail or electrical experience

You’ll also need to meet the physical and safety requirements of the role and be ready to complete structured training over a 1–3 year period.

Responsibilities

As a Trainee Signals Technician, you’ll support the safe and effective operation of our rail signalling systems. You’ll assist with the maintenance, installation, and repair of signals and components that control train movements across our network.

Under full supervision, you’ll learn to:

  • Read and work from technical diagrams and layout drawings
  • Install and maintain signal masts, relays, and control panels
  • Use testing equipment to diagnose faults in electrical and mechanical systems
  • Follow set procedures for cabling and connections
  • Document your work accurately and safely

This is a practical, hands-on role where safety comes first. You’ll work outdoors, sometimes away from your home depot, and develop your skills through structured on-the-job training and technical courses.
