The Neurosurgical Department at Nepean Hospital provides services to adult patients with a wide variety of neurosurgical conditions. The department also provides emergency care to children who present to the Emergency Department with severe injuries whilst transfer for definitive care is progressed.
Adult conditions that form the majority of the surgical workload are craniotomy for primary or secondary tumours, intracerebral haemorrhage, clipping of cerebral aneurysm, drainage of subdural haematoma, insertion of VP shunt and a complete range of spinal problems requiring cervical lumbar or thoracic surgery. Operations such as ACDF, Laminectomy, Discectomy, and Spinal Fusion are routine. Trauma contributes to the patient load and often includes the requirement for surgical treatment of spinal and cranial trauma. Typical and commonly performed operations include Craniotomy for Haematoma, insertion of EVD, insertion of ICP monitor, and various spinal operations including fixation.
