Summary: The basic function of the Training Counselor is to provide quality services which promote choice, independence, and community integration to adults with developmental disabilities or other special needs. Essential Responsibilities (include but not limited to:) Serve as an Interdisciplinary Team Member for members assigned by Program Director / Coordinators. Provide input regarding the member for Discovery, PCPs, Implementation Strategies, Behavior Plans, etc. Attend training on Implementation Strategies and Behavior Plans as instructed Apply methods described in Implementation Strategies, Behavior Plans and other plans pertinent to the member Implement Principles of Person-Centered Thinking Always follow Settings Rule requirements Support members in accessing the community, including 31C objectives Support members achieve independence in all activities Conduct individual/group activities at Program Coordinator request Conduct individual/group activities independently Ensure members control their own schedule, participation in activities of their choice Support members in assessing their own progress and the progress of others Support members in completing their own paperwork such as monthly summaries Support members in using Quantum Support members in gaining/keeping employment Support members in utilizing the community on a daily basis Support program use of Adventures, Expeditions and Neighbors programming Respond to medical and behavioral emergencies following appropriate Health and Safety, Safety Care, First Aid, CPR, event/CIRUS reporting and other procedures as necessary. Successful completion of all required training for certification as Direct Support Professional (DSP) Valid driver’s license (preferred) Requirements SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES No supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND/OR EXPERIENCE Six months or more experience working with the I/DD population. College coursework in a related field (social work, psychology, sociology, special education, rehabilitation, human services, etc.). Registration on the Illinois Health Care Worker Registry as a DSP (Direct Support Professional). Hobbies and/or skills in areas such as dance, arts & crafts, theater, gardening, sewing, etc., are desirable qualities in the ideal candidate.
