Description JOB SUMMARY Under the general direction of the Health Information Management Team the Transcriptionist transcribes dictated reports in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. Position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast pace and dynamic environment. Status: PRN - As needed STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE 1. Ensures adherence to proper infection control, OSHA and safety standards. 2. Maintains a 95% accuracy rate of all transcribed medical dictation using dictation equipment provided. 3. Maintains a 95% accuracy rate of spelling of medical terms and other words; utilizes correct punctuation and grammar. 4. Maintains 100% accuracy rate of all patient names and numbers for all reports; accurately transcribes patient identification and physician identification on all reports. 5. Accurately transcribes a minimum of 10 minutes of dictation per hour. 6. Transcribes dictated reports in a timely manner. Completes transcription from previous day, willing to stay late to finish transcription responsibilities. 7. Utilizes Physicians and/or personnel to expedite any problems or questions that exist when necessary. 8. Maintains daily activity logs. 9. Maintains the department in a clean, neat, and organized manner. 10. Receives, places, and transfers call using appropriate telephone etiquette. 11. Handles telephone requests appropriately. 12. Able to perform all aspects of processing all types of records according to departmental policies and procedures. 13. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of requirements for completion of the medical records. 14. Demonstrates the ability to mentally trace the record as it flows through various sections of the department and hospital. Requirements Minimum Level of Education: Education level equivalent to a high school diploma. Formal Training: Skills and experience in organizing, implementing, facilitating, and verbal and written communications. Licensure, Certification, Registration: None required Work Experience: Experience in records management or any aspect of the healthcare or related industry is preferred but not mandatory. Must be experienced with general office duties and equipment. Skills: Must be proficient in medical terminology, possess good grammar and punctuation skills. Must be able to type at least 60 words per minute and 10 minutes of dictation per hour.
