POSITION DESCRIPTION

At Sick Kids, we are committed to providing the highest quality of care to our patients. Our Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine is at the forefront of this mission, ensuring safe and effective transfusion practices. We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Transfusion Safety Officer to join our team.
The Transfusion Safety Officer will provide comprehensive technical and clinical expertise in all aspects of transfusion. This role is vital in enhancing patient care by collaborating with physicians, surgeons, nursing, and laboratory staff to address technical, clinical, and safety matters related to transfusion.

Education and Research:

• Educate clinicians, including nurses, residents, and laboratory staff, on transfusion practices.
• Support transfusion research and data collection as directed by the Medical Director.
• Present findings at provincial and national conferences and participate in interhospital committees focused on transfusion education

Technical, Clinical & Patient Consultation:

• Collaborate with the Medical Director, Senior Manager, Supervisor, and Transfusion Medicine laboratory staff to ensure policies and procedures meet current regulatory requirements.
• Work alongside the Blood Management Coordinator to implement blood conservation strategies throughout the Hospital.
• Promote evidence-based practices and recommend changes as necessary.
• Introduce and review blood transfusion equipment with relevant hospital personnel.
• Serve as a resource for technical issues related to blood transfusion.

Utilization Management:

• Conduct regular retrospective and prospective audits regarding the utilization of blood and blood products.
• Develop and monitor a blood product utilization program, addressing issues with the Medical Director and Transfusion Advisory Group (TAG).
• Engage with internal and external professional organizations to share best practices.
• Communicate regularly with fellow Transfusion Safety Officers regarding current activities and relevant issues.
