JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Capital Projects Transportation Engineering, Niagara Region has a Transportation Engineering Technician Student position with the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department. As a member of the transportation engineering department and the transportation design and asset management team, this student role will design and prepare supporting documents and engineering drawings for a variety of transportation projects, including roadway and intersection geometry, roadway lighting layout, bridges and culverts, property acquisitions and various keyplans, details and specification drawings.
Designs for all projects will be completed using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D, and as such, the selected student will gain extensive and valuable AutoCAD experience.
The successful candidate will also assist with transportation asset data management and contract administration, and from time-to-time, perform in-field base plans and design audits with other members of the transportation design team.
The selected student will also have the opportunity to interact with other members of the transportation engineering department outside of the design team, transportation project managers, traffic technicians, and construction inspectors.

EDUCATION

  • Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent (ie. GED), and
  • Must be currently enrolled in a civil engineering or transportation technology program, and returning to school in September 2024

KNOWLEDGE

  • Experience using AutoCAD (knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D is an asset).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.

SKILLS

  • Design and develop plans for roadway reconstruction, intersection improvements, and traffic signal designs.
  • Develop sketches and detailed drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Analyze existing traffic conditions and apply them to proposed reconstruction designs.
  • Apply basic economic assessments to your designs – weighing the costs of construction vs. the service provided.
  • Attend design review and design team meetings with all members of the transportation design team, and discuss their current and future projects.
  • Assist staff and construction inspectors with in-field inspections and quantity measurements.
  • Assist staff with construction project administration and project asset information.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to start May 2025
  • Must provide proof of educational requirements outlined above
  • A valid G(2) driver’s license or own vehicle is not required.
