The TRANSPORTATION MANAGER will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of transportation operations in a non-asset freight forwarding role. The successful candidate will serve as the primary contact for customers and carriers, including after-hours, and will be responsible for managing carrier relationships, negotiating rates, and coordinating the movement of freight to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery to customers. The key indicators of success in this position include: 1) Achieving customer satisfaction measured by volume and revenue growth, 2) Developing positive relationships with carriers that promote service performance and financial results, measured by margin and load on-time performance, 3) Ensuring accurate and complete execution of accessorial events to maximize YLCA’s positive financial impact, and 4) Driving growth in customer satisfaction.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • College Diploma/Bachelor’s Degree in logistics, transportation, or a related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years relevant experience in Transportation within the Freight Forwarding industry.
  • Minimum three (3) years People Leadership experience with ability to manage, motivate, and develop others.
  • Proven track record of managing carrier relationships and negotiating rates.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation regulations, laws, and best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal business communication skills for communicating with customers/vendors.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations as they relate to calculating pricing, revenue, and margin.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet Browser) and knowledge of LoadLink.
  • Must be able to present oneself in a cooperative and professional manner with both internal and external customers and vendors.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure to meet deadlines, while keeping work/files organized.
  • Ability and eagerness to learn new tasks and follow-through independently with minimal supervision.
  • Keen ability to assess situations, perform root cause analysis, and provide solutions.
  • Effective time management – ability to manage self, time, and priorities.

Responsibilities
  • Manages carrier relationships and negotiate rates to ensure competitive pricing and reliable service.
  • Selects appropriate means of transportation (FTL, LTL, Intermodal) to coordinate the movement of freight with carriers, customers and other stakeholders to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Ensures timely order entry and updates in operating system for reflecting accurate records of logistics – load notes, pricing, accessorial charges.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, including those related to transportation safety, security, and environmental protection.
  • Develops and implement transportation plans, schedules, and routes to optimize delivery times and reduce costs.
  • Completes billing on a timely basis (within 5 days of transaction) and follows invoicing procedures to enhance cash cycle.
  • Works closely with other departments, such as sales, customer service, and operations, to ensure effective communication and coordination of transportation activities.
  • Develops and maintains positive carrier relationships with a growth mindset.
  • Analyzes customer and vendor problems and resolves them quickly to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Resolves rate discrepancies with carriers and responds to returned pre-notes in a timely manner to promote On Time Performance (OTP).
  • Continuously communicates and develops multi-modal capabilities with customers.
  • Uses excellent decision-making skills and judgment to balance customer needs, YLCA’s yield and final service results.
  • Applies effective methodology in the provision of prompt quotations.
  • Regularly reviews tariffs, competitiveness of rates, and identify opportunities for cost savings.
  • Generates monthly performance statistics and reports them accordingly.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures, as well as applicable laws and regulations.

Performs the standard responsibilities of a People Leader which includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Communicates Company’s Mission & Vision Statements, Strategies, etc. and models Core Behaviors.
  • Conducts hiring interviews and selects top talent.
  • Trains and develops direct reports plus supports Continuous Learning to further develop direct reports.
  • Actively practices Communication by sharing information and conducting team meetings.
  • Contributes to the update and development of job descriptions, role profiles and performance measurement tools for direct reports as required.
  • Ensures adherence to global, regional and Company policies and procedures and drives individual Accountability for members of the team through leading by example.
  • Manages, coaches and counsels direct reports.
  • Conducts progressive discipline and terminates employment of direct reports where necessary.
  • Uses every reasonable precaution to protect a worker’s health and safety, i.e., informs workers of job hazards; trains them to do their jobs safely; ensures that workers work safely and use equipment and protective devices properly where required; reports all incidents to the Joint Health & Safety Committee and Senior Management in a timely fashion.
  • Manages the department’s budget in conjunction with the Branch Manager (Toronto) and/or Director, IFF and approves travel and business expenses of direct reports if applicable.
  • Responsible for managing Time & Attendance of all Direct Reports in a timely manner in ADP Workforce Now.
