The Director of Transportation is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the transportation services of the school district to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of students.Essential Functions: Scheduling and RoutingCoordinates optimization of bus stops, runs, and routes for general/special education studentsDeveloping and managing efficient bus routes and schedules, considering student locations, school start and end times, and other factors.Manage distribution of MBTA passes for middle and high school studentsEvaluates special requests (i.e., adding stops between designated streets, calculating number of students being transported, plotting student locations in a particular boundary, etc.), or unique projects (i.e., darkness busing, simulation of different bell times, double sessions, etc.), and determines which programs will be run to meet objectivesDetermines student eligibility for transportation based on District policies,regulations, and procedures.CommunicationStrong communication skills to effectively manage routes, communicate with vendor (yellow bus and van vendors)Strong communication skills to effectively update and communicate routes, communicate with stakeholders, including families, to handle any issues that ariseThe ability to write clear and informative emails, reports, and other documents is essential for documenting incidents, communicating policy changes, and providing instructionsActively soliciting and responding to feedback from drivers, students, and families can help improve transportation services and address potential issues.Proficiency with various communication tools (email, phone systems, transportation management software) is necessary for efficient communicationCommunicate with school administration, teachers, and other staff about transportation needs, student attendance, and any issues that ariseActive listening, and the ability to adapt communication style to different audiencesResponds to family, administrator, and public complaints/concerns related tostudent transportation, routes, and scheduling.BudgetPrepares and administers the transportation budget.Conducts an annual cost analysis of the transportation operation and provides recommendationsWorks with Finance Director to formulate specifications for transportation contracts with private vendors as necessaryMaintain cost accounting records for both regular transportation and special education transportationSubmitting required reports to state and federal agencies: The coordinator ensures timely and accurate submission of required transportation-related reportsComplianceKnowledge of student transportation laws, policies, regulations, and procedures.Stay up-to-date on all applicable regulations and actively participate in training and professional development opportunities to ensure a safe and compliant transportation system for studentsQualifications: A minimum of 5 years related experienceFamiliarity with bus routes and transportation needs.Clear and concise communications skills both oral and written.Additional Requirements: Attend School Committee meetings when requested (Meetings are typically held on the first and third Monday of each month)Perform additional duties as assigned by the District AdministrationCompensation: Work year is 260 days with flexible full-time hours to respond to transportation needs and timelines.
