Description Position Summary The Transportation Manager is responsible for supply chain processes of commodities produced through the Metro Recycling Facility, logistical oversight, planning, coordination, and monitoring of solid waste and recycling transportation at Metro Transfer Stations, Metro Recycling Facility, and hauling operations between Metro Park East Landfill and MWA transfer stations. The Transportation Manager will proactively collaborate with applicable stakeholders, both internally and externally. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: Plan, direct, and oversee all transportation programs, schedules and staff (20-30 employees), ensuring adequate staffing and operational coverage. Monitors and adjusts hauling activities between transfer stations to maintain operational efficiencies. Coordinates response for facilities in emergency situations. Responsible for forecasting/monitoring tonnage to ensure timely processing and transport of material. Manages timely communication, both internally and externally, between haulers and operational staff, ensuring issues are being addressed. Utilizes technology to oversee maintenance, route management, vehicle inspections and drivers’ hours of service, ensuring utilization by MWA employees. Coordinates details of transportation to meet internal production with external factors such as availability of transportation and expectation of buyers. Ensures compliance with DNR, DOT including all local, state, and federal regulations. Develops and implements metrics reporting and data analytics to identify issues, opportunities for process improvements, and cost reduction strategies. Monitors delivery status of all shipments to proactively resolve any transportation issues including changes to shipping schedules. Responsible for ensuring safe and compliant operation of all equipment. Works with Operations Managers to develop and implement the agency’s budget, capital expenditures budget, and equipment replacement schedules. Manages equipment utilization to ensure MWA goals are met and able to operate MWA equipment based on operational needs. Responsible for oversight of buildings, grounds, and premises of facilities to ensure the workplace is tidy, clean and safe. Coordinates with MRF equipment operators to ensure commodity shipment schedules are met. Receives feedback from buyers on the quality of material received. Shares timely feedback with the Operations Manager. Manages equipment utilization “rolling stock and containers” to ensure MWA goals are met. Develop relationships with 3rd party transportation providers to assist with projects on an as needed basis Assist with identifying opportunities for front and back hauls to increase revenue Monitor delivery status of all shipments to proactively resolve any transportation issues including changes to shipping schedules. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) High school diploma/GED required. 3-5 years’ experience in logistics management Excellent communication and negotiation Previous supervisory/management experience Preferred Education & Experience. Bachelor’s degree in business administration, logistics, transportation or related field preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and logistics software. Good management and organizational skills. Strong problem-solving skills. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers; handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 600 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Frequently stands, walks, or drives for extended periods of time. Work Environment This job is frequently required to perform work outdoors year-round with exposures to weather conditions prevalent at the time. This role will routinely be exposed to vibration and loud background noise and will frequently be exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; work in high, precarious places; risk of electric shock; and extreme heat (non-weather), Occasional non-regular work hours, which may include nights and weekends.
