JOB SUMMARY

Assists the department with the development and direction of student transportation routing. Under general supervision, oversees, manages, and performs a variety of services associated with the setting, maintaining, revising, and monitoring of school bus routes, schedules, and field trips.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional duties may be assigned.

  • Provides a positive district image for all parents, visitors, and personnel who desire information and/or service.
  • Develops bus routes and schedules.
  • Reviews each route to assure safe travel.
  • Makes changes as needed and gives notice to schools, parents/students, District departments, and drivers in advance of said changes.
  • Provides support for the district software program by attending training updates when needed/requested.
  • Reviews and determines the efficiency and practicability of routes and schedules.
  • Monitors driver adherence to schedules and routes.
  • Maintains regular attendance.
  • Complies with all State Law and District policies and regulations.
  • Assess the effectiveness of routes and schedules to deliver and return students.
  • Schedules special events, field trips, and other routine and non-routine bus-related needs.
  • Coordinates and assists with the dispatch of buses and related equipment.
  • Performs dispatcher duties.
  • May generate various scheduled and/or ad hoc reports.
  • Maintains numerous files and records.
  • Dispatches and assigns staff and buses for district field trips and extra-curricular activities.
  • Performs and properly completes pre-trip inspections of the bus.
  • Complies with all traffic and discipline policies set forth.
  • Substitutes as a school bus driver in times of excessive absences and/or emergencies.
  • Coordinates transportation for McKinney/Vento students through communications with Federal Programs Director, schools and parents.
  • Coordinates the Trip Reduction Program for nine District sites, including reports for State regulation, award distributions and information dissemination.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of district boundaries, streets, schools, and out-of-area schools serviced by the district.
  • Knowledge of demographics and boundary changes, i.e. data discovery.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal statutes, rules, ordinances, guidelines, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of applicable school district policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of file and records management.
  • Knowledge of the principles of traffic/route coordination, community resources, locations, and related areas.
  • Knowledge of proper writing skills, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with school district employees and staff, School Board members, vendors, contractors, the general public, and others having business with the district.
  • Ability to work in a potentially stressful environment with time limits, time-sensitive deadlines and other work-related demands.
  • Ability to simultaneously handle and coordinate a variety of duties and tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population representing potentially opposing interests.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
  • Ability to meet deadlines with time constraints.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Education and/or experience equivalent to two years of responsible work involving setting up and maintaining routes, schedules, coordinating resources or closely related responsibilities.
  • Must possess at the time of application and maintain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), Passenger endorsement, First Aid Certification, CPR Certification and other appropriate certificates and/or endorsements.
  • Must have passed physical agility test and D.O.T. physical/drug screening.
  • Knowledge of T.O.M. software preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to understand and interpret road maps, street signs, and related information.
  • Ability to respond orally and, as required, in writing, to questions, inquiries and in providing assistance and information to co-workers, school district staff and others having business with the district.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to demonstrate basic mathematical knowledge and working with basic mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING SKILLS:

  • Ability to review road maps, provide directions, and establish easily understood, practical bus routes and schedules.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other departments, school personnel, other maintenance staff, and business contacts from outside of the district.
  • Ability to perform duties in compliance with all district requirements and Governing Board Policies.
